Former English Studies Undergraduate
I knew after finishing University that I wanted to go into marketing, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to go about doing that, or even if it was the right career for me. But the Careers Network Internship Programme allowed me to explore this interest whilst gaining key skills to make me a competitive candidate.
I started as a Marketing Assistant with the University’s Business Engagement team where I contributed to the teams work supporting academics in collaborating with our partners on life-changing technologies, world leading research, and drive equality, sustainability, and healthcare innovations regionally and globally.
Supporting the management and delivery of events, working on digital campaigns and growing our global audience through creating content for social media are all skills I developed throughout my internship and have gone on to use in my role. Since I completed my internship in 2021, I’ve been fortunate enough to continue on at the University and progress professionally.
I’m now working as a Digital and Events Marketing Officer within the newly established Research Strategy and Services division, where I’ve had the opportunity to work with some fantastic people on some amazing projects – such as contribute to the development of the new University brand, write speeches for Vice-chancellor Professor Adam Tickell, and project manage events and various communication developments for the division.
I would recommend any current student or recent graduate in applying to the Internship programme, especially if you want to build skills and experience in a sector/role you’re looking to move into after University or explore a career path you hadn’t considered before. The Internship Programme gives you the knowhow and experience recruiters expect, as well as supports your development of core competencies that are useful in any job you think consider to apply for after University.
The Careers Network, as well as the wider University staff community, are full of forward-thinking people that genuinely want to support its students and academics to be the best they can be. Contributing to great projects and working with great people is one of the fundamental reasons why I’ve continued at the University.
