Wellbeing Wednesday - 17 June 2026
Your marks will be released on 22 June via the Student Gateway. We know you’ve worked hard and hope you’re happy with your grades, but if you believe your performance has been impacted by unforeseen circumstances or an administrative error, then you might want to explore the academic appeals process. We’ve broken down everything you need to know:
- Right to appeal
- How do I apply for academic appeal?
- Where can I go to for further support?
Right to appeal
We’ve tracked recent changes to help you to navigate the appeals process. You may choose to appeal against award and progress decisions in the following instances:
First Year Undergraduate Students
You may only appeal decisions that prevent you from continuing your studies. This means you cannot appeal capped or late-penalty marks if you are still able to progress to the next year.
Undergraduate Students (Year 2 onwards)
You may appeal decisions that:
- prevent you from continuing your studies;
- affect your degree classification; or
- allow progression with capped resit marks.
Postgraduate Taught Students
You may only appeal after receiving your final marks, or where a decision results in an alternative qualification or withdrawal from your programme.
How do I apply for an academic appeal?
If you intend to appeal, you’ll need to submit the Appeal Form online, along with supporting evidence. We’ve outlined the Standards of Evidence for Academic Appeals to make it clear what counts.
Applications for an academic appeal must be received within 10 working days of the date you received your results on the Student Gateway, meaning the deadline to apply will be 6 July. If you think you may be unable to meet this deadline, please contact appeals@contacts.bham.ac.uk
Appeals usually take 6-8 weeks to be processed, however this can be longer depending on how many appeals the team receive.
Where can I go for further support?
The Wellbeing Team are unable to advise on appeals, but Guild Advice @ the Guild of Students have trained, experienced staff who are able to guide you through the University's appeals processes. To contact them, you can fill in their Advice Request Form or email guildadvice@contacts.bham.ac.uk
