It's that time of year again! Join us on campus for our Christmas festivities, with exciting activities and cosy experiences throughout December. Whether you want to meet Santa, enjoy some Christmas crafts, sing carols in the Great Hall or just connect with others, there is some Christmas joy for everyone.

Happy Christmas Crochet with Library Services

Suitable for all students

Drop in to the Main Library and enjoy some festive Christmas crochet. You can enjoy making a decoration, a pair of Christmas earrings, or help 'yarn-bomb' the local postbox! All materials are provided, and all levels are welcome, whether you're an expert or complete beginner.

Society Spotlight: UBCU's Christmas Carols

Each Christmas the University of Birmingham Christian Union put on a massive Carols event for the whole University - reportedly the biggest free Carol Concert in Birmingham!

They say: "It's a really exciting opportunity to share the Gospel with so many of our fellow students and staff. Our 2022 Carols service is on Wednesday 30th of November. Everyone is welcome, and the best part is it is completely free, it would amazing for you to bring your friends and enjoy beautiful sung carols with a message." Find out more.

Christmas Light Switch-on

As it gets dark on Thursday 1 December, Chancellor's Court will come alight as our annual Christmas Light switch-on returns for 2022. Come along and join us as our special guest Santa flips the switch. Keep a look out for our beloved Old Joe having a festive surprise!

Celebrate the seasons with Yin Yoga at the Barber

Thursday 1 December, 18:00-19:00, Barber Institute of Fine Arts

As we start to wind down into these winter months, enjoy this peaceful and reflective yin yoga practice, surrounded by our intimate gallery space. Inspired by our exhibition Peasants and Proverbs: Pieter Brueghel the Younger as Moralist and Entrepreneur, we will be focussing our practice on the cycle of the seasons and this hibernation period in nature's cycle.

Places cost £3 per person. Limited capacity. Booking is required. This event will be held at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in our galleries. All levels and abilities welcome so no prior yoga experience is needed.

University Philharmonic Orchestra

Sunday 4 December, 15:00-17:00, Elgar Concert Hall, Bramall Music building

Join the Music Society Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate the birthdays of John Williams (90th) and Ralph Vaughan Williams (150th), with music from Star Wars, E.T. and Superman, as well as Vaughan Williams' 'A London Symphony'. Tickets cost £5. Book now.

From Monday 5 to Friday 9 December all students, staff and graduands can take a free ride on our traditional carousel located on the Green Heart amphitheatre. Open from 11:00 to 18:00 each day.

Guild Christmas Fair

Join the Guild of Students at their Christmas Fair as they ‘deck the (Deb) hall’ and celebrate the festive season! Local businesses will be offering gifts and festive treats, so you won’t want to miss out. Grab your free ticket to let them know you're coming.

Christmas Lounge @ Shackleton

Throughout the Christmas period 10am-3pm, Shackleton Lounge

Suitable for all students 

The lounge will be open throughout the Christmas period 10am-3pm.  Festive films and music videos will be played on the screens when the lounge is open.  Food and drink, including festive snacks and festive hot drinks, will be available to purchase from the lounge and board games will be available to help encourage people to engage others using the lounge space.  

A schedule of the films to be played will be provided via email to all accommodation residents once listings are released – so please keep an eye on your emails!  Selected films will include staff members from the accommodation team or the guild being available to offer any support/advice any residents may need as well as hand out festive goody bags to all in attendance.

Society Spotlight: Strictly Brum Dancing

Saturday 10 December, 18:45-00:00 midnight, Debating Hall, Guild of Students

Strictly Brum Dancing is back! Join BALADS for their glittering annual event, with their couples hard at work this term learning their routines to compete for the glitterball trophy.

Representatives from committees from a range of student groups will be dancing a variety of styles for your vote, and there will also be some exclusive demos from some of their advanced couples, as well as a charity raffle with some great prizes! This year they are supporting the local charity RSVP, which provides support for victims of rape and sexual violence.

Student tickets cost £6 and can be bought online or on the door. Non-students are welcome to attend, with tickets at £7.

Pass on your unwanted items

Moving out of halls (or just having a clear out)? Pass on your unwanted items for incoming students and help save them money and reduce waste. You can donate your items to the Student Mentors' Office in Shackleton, between 16:00-20:00 from Monday 12 - Friday 16 December.

You can donate kitchen items (please, no knives), sports equipment, toys and games, clothes and shoes, ornaments and decorations. Unfortunately they can't take bedding or electrical equipment.

University Carol Concert

Come and join us at the annual University Carol Service concert held in the prestigious Great Hall. Led by the Univeristy's Multi-Faith Chaplaincy, with music from the University Upper Voices choir, it's sure to be a festive service not to be missed. Open to all students, staff and the local community, the concert is free to attend and no need to book in advance.

Each month you will test out exciting and sometimes unexpected drawing techniques inspired by the Barber’s collection. Reconnect with your creative side and discover how fun and relaxing drawing can be. No booking necessary, just meet in the foyer at 13:00. All materials will be provided - just bring yoursefl!

Christmas Crafts

Come and join the Craft Society this festive season as we make and create different Christmas themed crafts in the upstairs seating of Starbucks, Muirhead! You can choose from a variety of crafts, from Christmas crackers to hand made Christmas baubles. This is a chill laid back session and we welcome anyone the opportunity to join us (whether you're at a beginner skill or a professional skill)  and you can de-stress and take time off your studies.

For the first 25 students who sign up, you will receive a hot drinks voucher to use in Starbucks while you are there.
