Christmas opening times

While many of you travel away from Birmingham during the vacation period, we know that some of you may choose to stay on or near campus over the Christmas period. 

A list of the services available at the University are outlined below including study spaces, support and catering. At the bottom of the page there are also links to local services including shops, banks, public transport and healthcare providers. 

Most University services are closed from the evening of Friday 20 December 2019 and will reopen on the morning of Thursday 2 January 2020. Any services that remain open, including the Library, will operate reduced hours during this period.

You will still be able to login to my.bham to access all of your normal online services throughout the vacation. 

 Library

The Main Library will be open 24/7 until 22:00 on Friday 20 December. The opening times will then be as follows:

From Thursday 2 January 2020 (8:00) the Main Library will reassume 24/7 opening.

When the Main Library is closed, books can be returned via an external book return machine next to the main entrance.

Virtual help via our 24/7 chat service will be continuous over the entire vacation should you need any help. Online resources for study skills (as alternative to one to one support) are also available via the Academic Skills Gateway. 

The Library Cafe will close Friday 20 December at 2.00pm & reopen on Thursday 2 January at 9.00am.

 Study Spaces

Westmere Postgraduate Research Hub

The majority of the time, Postgraduate researchers and staff members have swipe card access to the Westmere building from 06:00 to midnight. However, the building will be closed from midnight on Sunday 22 December 2019 and re-open on Thursday 2 January at 6.00am.  

 Aston Webb Student Hub

The Aston Webb Student Hub will be open as follows:

During the University closed period, students will be able to submit an online enquiry. These will be responded to swiftly upon our return on Thursday 2 January 2020. Queries may take longer than during term-time, but every effort will be made to respond as quickly as possible.

 International Student Team (IST)

IST will be closed from Friday 20 December 2019, reopening on Thursday 2 January 2020 at 9:00am.

 IT Service Desk

The IT Service Desk will be closed from Saturday 21 December through to Friday 27 December web calls will not be monitored during this time. Normal Service will resume on Thursday 2nd January 2020, more information can be found here.

The Guild of Students will be closed from Friday 20 December 2019 until Thursday 2 January 2020, some services will be back open at a later date (specified below).

For students in University accommodation, the Vale Village reception will be open 24/7 throughout Christmas.  You can contact the Vale reception by email at valereception@contacts.bham.ac.uk or on 0121 415 8520.

Selly Oak and Pritchatts Park receptions will be closed over the vacation period, but staff will be on site throughout to respond to any issues.  These staff can be contacted on: Selly Oak Village 0121 415 1011  Pritchatts Park Village 0121 414 9022.

 Multi-Faith Chaplaincy

The Multi-Faith Chaplaincy will be open between 08:00 and 22:00 up until Friday 13 December 2019. Please see below for the opening times over the vacation period:

Healthcare

South Birmingham GP Walk In Centre is open 365 days a year 08.00am- 20:00pm, no appointment necessary. The telephone number is 0121 415 2095 and the address is 15 Katie Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham, B29 6JG.

If you are worried about an urgent medical concern, call NHS 111 to speak to a trained NHS advisor, who will be able to direct you to the most appropriate care. Simply dial 111 from your phone. The 111 service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can also access the service online.

The Accident & Emergency department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (next to the Medical School) is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
