Canvas Status Update

We promised you an update on the situation with Canvas as that develops through the day…

Canvas is back up and accessible – you can log-in as normal and find the materials you might need for your studies, revision, and assessment preparation.  We are aware that the system is running a little more slowly than usual, and this might affect your user experience today.

While it remains a possibility that the platform will become inaccessible again over the weekend, we want to make absolutely sure that our students are not disadvantaged by circumstances outside of our and your control.

For students who may have been affected last night and this morning we are holding the deadline extensions we set out in our earlier message:

  • All submission deadlines from Friday 8 May to Tuesday 12 May inclusive will be extended to 5.00pm BST on Wednesday 13 May.
  • You can still submit assessments before the revised deadline and should manage your assessment load in the way that works best for you.

As an additional precaution against any further possible problems –

We will be deferring all canvas-based examinations scheduled for Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 May next week. This mainly affects students in Dubai (who are studying online at the moment). A small number of Edgbaston-based students will be affected by the rescheduling decision, and you will be contacted directly.  All other examinations scheduled for next week are expected to go ahead as planned.

We are making arrangements to host a backup of Canvas learning materials on an alternative site as quickly as we can, just in case, and we will let students know if resources are made available for their course.

It is also important to remember that there are lots of study resources available outside of Canvas.  You can access your module resource and reading lists, journals and our extensive online collection here.

Again, we want to reassure you that no student will be unfairly affected by these circumstances. We will ensure that Exam Boards are made aware of the impact of these short-term disruptions, so students do not need to submit an extenuating circumstances claim relating to the Canvas disruption unless their personal circumstances are unique and substantial.

And don’t forget that there is plenty of help and support available at our Time to Talk webpages and on our UoBe Ready pages.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
