Stay safe this term and be drink aware
With start of term just around the corner, there’s loads to look forward to with a calendar full of welcome events, parties, and nights out. It's the perfect time to reconnect, socialise, make memories with friends and enjoy yourself.
But while you're out having fun, whether at a busy club, a student bar, or just hanging out at house parties, it’s important to stay aware especially when it comes to drink safety.
Drink spiking is still something that affects students across the UK. It's when someone puts alcohol or drugs into another person’s drink without them knowing. It can happen anywhere and the effects can be serious.
This week is Spiking Intensification Week, a national campaign to raise awareness and help keep everyone safe. So here are a few simple tips to look after yourself and your friends:
- Don’t leave your drink unattended — if you walk away, grab a new one when you're back.
- Only accept drinks from people you know and trust.
- Keep an eye on your friends and check in with each other.
- If something feels off — with your drink, your surroundings, or how you’re feeling — tell someone you trust straight away.
- If you think you’ve been spiked, speak to a friend, venue staff, or security immediately, and report it to your University Community Safety and Security team.
Your safety is our priority so don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.
