Burglar-proof your home before the holidays
If you’re soon heading home for Christmas do make sure that your house is kept as safe as possible whilst it’s empty over the holidays.
Ensure that all of your doors and windows are closed and locked- yep, even the upstairs ones! It’s particularly important, however, that doors and windows on the ground floor or with easy access from the road are securely locked.
If your locks are not reliable, speak to your landlord to get them changed. For an extra precautionary measure, free window and door alarms are available to collect from the Community Safety Hub at North Lodge on main campus.
Taking your valuables home with you is the best option to ensure their safety, but if this isn’t possible, then make sure you’ve locked them away out of sight. Lockable cupboards and drawers are a good way to do this. It may also be useful to put a distinctive mark such as a sticker on your valuables or record the serial numbers of your technology: this makes them easier to recover in the case of theft. For an extra layer of protection, you can insure your possessions should you need to replace them.
You can always ask for safety advice if you need it. Our friendly Community Safety Team are available to provide security and safety support. Head to the Community Safety Hub, by the North Gate, open weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00. Note they’ll be closed from Monday 23 December 2024 and reopening on Thursday 2 January 2024. For any security issues in the meantime please contact Security Services (0121 414 4444).
