Be aware: Illegal gambling dens targeting students

There has been a recent increase in illegal gambling dens operating in the region. These are unlicensed venues that break UK gambling laws. While gambling itself is legal in the UK, it must take place in licensed premises.

Students have reportedly been approached to take part in these illegal setups. We want to make sure you are aware and take care when considering any form of gambling.

What you need to consider

We encourage you to be mindful when gambling. It is important to know the risks that gambling carries, which can lead to financial, emotional, and social difficulties if not approached responsibly. Even small bets can add up over time, so please consider these risks carefully.

However, if you do choose to gamble:

  • Only do so at a legal and licensed venue
  • Check for a visible UK Gambling Commission license (often near the entrance)
  • Avoid any setup that feels secretive, unregulated, or suspicious

Engaging in illegal gambling can put you at risk of fines, legal trouble, and other dangers.
