Certificate Information

Degree certificates

A degree certificate is an award gained at the University of Birmingham and conferred upon you at one of the University’s Degree Congregations.

Each graduate is entitled to one free copy of their degree certificate. Students graduating in absentia from one of our Degree Congregations should expect their certificates to be posted by the end of January (following a December Degree Congregation) or by the end of August (following a July Degree Congregation).

There may be isolated instances where degree certificates are lost in the postal system, in which case graduates are entitled to request a free replacement certificate as long as the original certificate was posted to the graduate’s current home or temporary address and it is requested within 3 months of the date of their graduation.

If your degree certificate has been lost in the post then please log a call via the Online Enquiry Service confirming your full name, student ID number and the address to which you would like the certificate posted.

If you have lost your original degree certificate, or if you did not inform us of a change in your address,, then you will need to purchase a replacement certificate from the Secure Document website (post 2002 students) or the Online Shop (pre 2002 students).

Non-Graduation certificates

A Non-Graduation award is an award gained at the University of Birmingham on a programme which does not need to be conferred at a graduation ceremony. The award will include both your transcript of marks and degree certificate.

These programmes can be at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and a list of these programmes includes:

Undergraduate

  • Certificate of Higher Education
  • Diploma of Higher Education
  • University Certificate
  • University Diploma
  • Advanced Certificate

Postgraduate

  • Postgraduate Certificate
  • Postgraduate Diploma
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PG Dip Ed)
  • Graduate Certificate
  • Graduate Diploma

When will I receive my certificate?

Following the Board of Examiners decision that you have successfully completed your programme your School will update your record. Your award will then appear in Online Results on my.bham.

Taught Student Administration will then arrange for your certificate and transcript to be posted out to you. The whole process normally takes between 6-8 weeks from when your record has been updated.

Post

Your certificate will be posted via 1st class or normal air mail (if you are based overseas) and will be posted out to your ‘home’ address. It is therefore very important to keep your address details up-to-date on the Portal.

If your home address is overseas and you wish to purchase DHL to guarantee delivery, you can order this via the Online Shop. Please note that this is also an option for UK students.
