About My Right to Study

If you are a student who requires immigration permissions to be in the UK, the University is required by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to check your Right to Study.

You are required to upload your immigration documents as you progress through your visa application to arriving in the UK. The International Student Team (IST) will then check your documents and the University retains a copy of these documents.

Continuing Students

You should only upload documents if you are a continuing student who has received a new visa or passport since your last Right to Study check or if you are an EU/EEA national continuing your studies. All other students with no changes to their immigration documents are not required to upload any documents.

How does it work?

Upload your current passport as soon as you enrol on a course with the University and upload the other required documents when you receive them, such as Vigenette, eVisa or BRP. The documents that you need to upload depends on your visa type. Please carefully check the information guides for the documents you need to upload.

Each time you upload a document, it will be checked by the International Student Team who will contact you to confirm if the document has been approved or rejected. If it is rejected you will be told why, and asked to re-submit the appropriate document.

Find out what you need to upload

You must upload the documents before your course start date. The Right to Study check is essential to start your studies at the University of Birmingham.  If you do not provide the required documents within three weeks of your course start date, the University will be required to withdraw immigration sponsorship meaning that you will not be able to continue your studies and will be required to leave the UK.

Completing your Right to Study check

When all of your documents and information has been uploaded and confirmed by the International Student Team, you will have completed your Right to Study check. You will receive an email confirming that you have completed the check which you can keep for your records.
