Cycling on and around campus
As the days get longer and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to enjoy cycling to and around campus. Travelling by bike is not only a great way to save money once you’ve got your equipment, but it’s also fantastic for your wellbeing and kinder to the environment too.
Here at UoB, we’ve made it easy to cycle with confidence. Across campus, you’ll find thousands of secure bike lockers, sheltered parking areas, and shower facilities to help make your journey as convenient as possible.

If your bike needs a little TLC, you can take advantage of free bike checks at our on-campus cycle shop, Gear Up, located by the steps of Staff House. The shop is open Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00, and our friendly bike mechanics are always happy to help. You can pop in for a chat or book an appointment through their website.
Keeping your bike safe is important too. You can collect a free D-lock from the Community Safety Hub, open Monday to Friday, 10:00–16:00. Just bring along your bike and student ID. Free bike lights and security tags are also available.
For extra peace of mind, you can register your bike for free through UoB’s “Lock It, Mark It” scheme. This includes property marking and registration on the National Cycle Database. Simply visit the Community Safety Hub with your bike and ID card, or book an appointment by emailing communitysafetyteam@contacts.bham.ac.uk.
And if you’re new to cycling, feeling a little out of practice, or just want to boost your confidence, there are skills courses available to help you feel comfortable on campus roads, cycle paths, and city streets. Sessions are led by qualified instructors and suitable for all experience levels, with bikes and helmets provided if needed. For more information or to book your course space, visit cycling info on the student intranet.
Happy cycling!!
