Stay ahead of fake landlords
Finding your student accommodation should be an exciting part of university life. But with the rental market often moving quickly, it’s important to stay alert and protect yourself from scams. Here’s how you can stay safe from fake landlords.
Warning! Fraud prevention
Before you sign anything or transfer money, take a moment to complete these essential checks:
- Be cautious about what you’re signing and never hand over money up front without verifying the property and the landlord.
- Do not feel pressured to sign a contract. Take your time and carry out the appropriate checks to make sure everything is legitimate. You can use our Contract checking tool for reassurance.
- Use reputable companies like the Housr app (in the UK), UoB’s official private sector property search engine, to check that properties are legitimate. You can find out more on the Supporting students - University of Birmingham page.
- Never share personal information, such as bank details, passport number or visa documents, with someone you do not know or trust.
Safety advice and support
If you think you've been targeted by a scam, or know someone who has, stay calm and seek support. Our teams are here to help.
- Visit the Community Safety Hub at North Lodge (at the top of the Green Heart). It’s open Monday to Friday, 10.00am–4.00pm, where you can speak to our friendly Community Safety Officers. More information on our Community Safety and security teams pages.
- Speak with our Campus Police Safety Officer, PC Paul Jones for additional guidance and reassurance. Meet your new campus PC.
Housing and financial advice?
There are also independent services available to support you:
- The Guild of Students Advice Service offers free, confidential advice on housing and contracts.
- The Citizens Advice Bureau provides free, independent and confidential guidance to help you understand your rights and options.
