Your health check-in for Welcome Week
Starting university comes with a lot of new information, from finding your way around campus to working out where to go for support when you need it.
As part of your pre-uni prep, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check you know how to access healthcare while at UoB. That could include registering with a local GP, saving the details for support services, and checking whether you are up to date with any routine vaccinations.
MenB vaccines available this year
This year, some students are also being offered the MenB vaccine through a one-off UK-wide programme ahead of the 2026 academic year.
MenB is one cause of meningitis and septicaemia. The vaccine is being offered to specific groups of young people, including some first-time students entering higher education or moving into further education accommodation or halls of residence for the first time in autumn 2026.

The programme also includes eligible international students and students in the UK Devolved Administrations and Crown Dependencies. International students under 25 entering their first year of university should receive their first dose in their home country where possible. You will need to be registered with a GP (doctor).
If you are eligible and decide to have the vaccine, you will need two doses for protection. The second dose can be administered 28 days after the first dose and the body then requires a further two weeks to build good level of immunity – the process is six weeks in total.
You can now book online to receive your first of two vaccines at a local pharmacy.
Get vaccinated on campus this September
If you haven’t been able to receive your first vaccine before travelling to Birmingham, don’t worry, you’ll be able to once you arrive.
During Arrival Weekend and Welcome Week, from 19 to 25 September, there’ll be MenB vaccination walk-ins on campus, where you can get either your first or second dose.
All we ask is that you register your interest in attending a campus clinic so that vaccine demand can be accurately planned.
