Joint statement from the Vice-Chancellor and the Guild of Students
We have been shocked and horrified by the events in Southport last week and the violence and disorder that has followed around the UK. Our students are spread across the country, as well as being here in Birmingham over the summer months, and may have experienced or been fearful of experiencing racism or discrimination associated with these events.
There is no place in our society for the criminal violent disorder and hatred that we have seen. Violence is not protest; violence is violence. Peaceful protest is a right we champion and fight for.
As a civic institution and a student’s union representing students from across the UK and around the globe, we greatly value the rich diversity and multiculturalism within our community as well as within Birmingham and our region. We stand for tolerance, and stand against xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism in all forms.
We understand students may feel targeted because of the colour of their skin, their religion, or their perceived background. If you experience any incident of racism or harassment, there is always someone to speak to for support. You should always report crimes to the Police, wherever you are, and help from your own community networks and local agencies.
- You can seek support directly by contacting the University’s Report and Support portal – where you can report any instances of harassment and we will be in touch to offer support.
- You can contact the University Community Safety team for support and advice, and they can also support you with reporting hate crime if necessary.
- You can also download the SafeZone app, which allows you to call for assistance or report issues to directly to Security Services when in Birmingham.
- You can contact the University’s emotional support helpline UB Heard. at any time or contact Guild Advice online or via email.
- Your officer team are available to support you, represent you, and to listen to any concerns you might have. You can contact us via social media or email. Visit our Officer Hub for details.
The University and your Guild have an excellent relationship with local Police and local agencies, and we are well-connected with each of these to share intelligence, offer mutual support and work together to ensure the safety of our students and staff, and the peaceful, respectful diversity of our community and the wider community.
With all best wishes
Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and The Guild of Students Officer Team.
