Be an active bystander

A safe and respectful university environment starts with understanding consent and taking responsibility for how we treat ourselves and others. Whether you or someone you know has experienced harmful behaviour, even small actions can make a difference. Knowing how to respond in difficult situations, how to reflect on your own behaviour, and how to support a friend or peer is all part of being an active member of our community.

That’s why we encourage all students to complete either the Consent Matters or Lead the Change.

Which course should I do?

There are two versions of this training, and you’ll be directed to the one that’s most relevant to your student experience. Both cover similar themes around consent, respectful behaviour and how to look after yourself and others, but they approach the content in slightly different ways to suit different types of learners.

You don’t need to choose which one to take; the correct version will appear for you on Canvas.

You’ll find it in your Student Support & Development Hub or, for postgraduate researchers, in your Postgraduate Research and Development Hub.

Regardless of which version you complete, you’ll gain the tools to help build a positive, respectful, and inclusive university community.

What are the courses about?

Both courses help you understand consent, recognise concerning behaviours, and know how to respond if you or someone else needs support. They equip you with the skills to be an active bystander, and for fostering respectful, healthy relationships – both on campus and beyond.

They cover three key areas:

  • Thinking about consent
  • Communication skills and relationships
  • Looking out for others

The courses take approximately one-hour and all UoB students are expected to complete one of them. They teach you how to recognise, respond to, and report unacceptable behaviours, including bullying, harassment, discrimination, and sexual misconduct. They also encourage you to reflect on your own choices and the role you play in shaping a positive university culture.

Why it matters

Understanding consent is essential for creating a safer, more inclusive UoB community. The course equips you with tools to support your peers and build a respectful environment.

The content is delivered clearly and sensitively, but we recognise that some topics may be triggering. You can always choose to take the course when you feel ready.

Seeking support can feel daunting, but our trained professionals in our Report + Support scheme are here to help. Speaking out and seeking guidance is a brave and important step.

How to access the course

You can find the Consent Matters course on Canvas in your Student Support & Development Hub if you’re an undergraduate or postgraduate taught student, or, for postgraduate researchers, the course is available in your Postgraduate Research and Development Hub on Canvas.
