Important sponsorship information for our international postgraduate student community
As international students studying in the UK on a Student visa, you will be aware of your requirements under the terms of your Student visa set by the UK Government. The University as your “sponsor” also has several requirements placed upon it. Together, both parties must follow these requirements so that you can continue to study in the UK.
As a Student Sponsor, the University of Birmingham is legally required to monitor the attendance and academic engagement of international students* throughout their studies.
We understand that sometimes students may wish to take a break from their studies or complete their thesis from overseas. As an international student it is important to be aware that certain decisions may result in the withdrawal of immigration sponsorship.
Completing your thesis (PGR) or dissertation (PGT) abroad
If you decide to do your write up of the final stage of your studies abroad you must make an authorised absence request. This is so that the University can withdraw immigration sponsorship, because whilst you are overseas the University will not be able to monitor your academic engagement in line with its Student Sponsor Duties.
You should request an authorised absence** for all leave taken; however, it is important to note that taking authorised absence to go on holiday is not the same as completing your thesis or dissertation abroad. Taking a regular holiday, within the allocated amount, will not result in your sponsorship being withdrawn.
To request an authorised absence, you will need to contact your department:
For more information and guidance on this update and how to request an authorised absence you can visit the relevant FAQs pages for PGR students or PGT students.
*Please note this is not applicable to Distance Learner students.
**Making a request for an authorised absence does not guarantee you will receive one. You must check in with your department for this.
