Support available following recent events in the city

We know that when we see awful content in the news and on social media it can leave you feeling unsettled, especially when it’s about our city. We understand that the recent tragic incident in Birmingham city centre has left students feeling unsettled or anxious. It is completely valid to feel this way, and we want to reassure you that the University is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for our students.

If you have any concerns about your safety or wellbeing, please remember that support is always available.

  • You can visit the Community Safety Hub at North Gate (open Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm) for support and to collect free personal safety equipment, including personal safety alarms.
  • The SafeZone app connects you directly to University security teams in an emergency and allows you to request help quickly if you ever feel unsafe or are injured on campus.
  • You can access UBHeard — a free, confidential 24/7 listening and emotional support service available every day of the year. Please reach out if you need to talk to someone.
  • Make sure you know who to call if you ever feel at risk:
    • 999 – Emergency services (use this if you feel you are at immediate risk)
    • 0121 414 4444 – Campus Security (on campus emergency)
    • 0121 414 2613 – Community Safety Hub (non-emergency support)

Remember that you are not alone. Our University community is built on care, connection and looking out for one another. If talking to someone could help you, please don’t hesitate to reach out via our Time to Talk pages.
