Volunteering and Work Experience Opportunities

Recent events have created a challenging environment for people who were hoping to complete work experience during this time, with many organisations postponing internship schemes whilst the UK is in lockdown. Below we’ve highlighted some great volunteering and virtual work experience opportunities that will help you to develop valuable skills and experience, and stand out in the graduate job market.

  • Careers Network are working with Virtual Internships to offer a Virtual Internship Programme. The programme will provide students with part-time, two month long internships that will take place remotely. Successful applicants will also receive a bursary of £1000.
  • 80,000 Hours have created a document listing organisations that are currently seeking volunteers to assist them with projects that aim to tackle issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • If you’re interested in making a difference in the lives of young people, there a lots of volunteer mentoring and tutoring opportunities out there. Brightside and The Princes Trust are recruiting volunteer mentors, as well as volunteers for other key work areas like content creation and administrative work. If you’re interested in teaching, The Access Project are looking for volunteer tutors to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • UN Volunteers are currently recruiting volunteers for a wide range of positions and projects, including those directly related to tackling COVID-19.
  • COVID-19 Open Dataset Research Challenge is a call to action to people with expertise in AI to help develop text and data mining tools that can help the medical community develop answers to high priority scientific questions.
  • Hope for Justice, a global charity combatting human trafficking and modern slavery are seeking volunteers across all areas of their business
  • KPMG are currently offering a virtual internship in Data Analytics Consulting. Take the mystery out of big data and learn what it’s like to produce business results with the KPMG data analytics team.
  • RateMyPlacement and DBL are offering a Work Ready Virtual Experience – an online experience that will help you to develop valuable skills to help your transition from education to world of work, focussing on core soft skills like networking and creating a great first impression.
  • NHS Volunteer Responders – recruitment for volunteer responders to help support the NHS and care sector during COVID-19 has been temporarily paused whilst they process applications for the first intake, but it’s definitely something worth considering applying to for when they reopen applications.
