Mindfulness is becoming ever more popular, and is being introduced in schools, universities and businesses across the world. One of the most popular definitions of mindfulness come from Jon Kabat-Zinn:

‘Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.’ (Kabat-Zinn, 1994: 4)

Meditation is a practice that helps us to cultivate mindfulness, and a way to develop our natural capacity of awareness, which gives us the ability to recognise the thoughts and emotions that distract us from our present experience. This, in turn, allows us to take more control over lives, respond more skilfully to situations as they arise, and develop greater emotional strength, intelligent action, and a sense of well-being in our everyday life.

Research suggests that practicing mindfulness can:

Reduce stress and anxiety
Promote physical and psychological well-being
Develop emotional resilience
Increase focus
Promote compassion for self and others
Help overcome insomnia
