Bottle Amnesty

The Bottle Amnesty is returning on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th March, and we're looking for volunteers!

The annual Bottle Amnesty gives residents of the student villages an opportunity to recycle their hoards of glass bottles accumulated from the year’s pre-drinks and parties. Staff and students work together over a busy couple of days to collect the prized displays that are their flat windows. The bottles are then sent for recycling and given another life.

Last year we collected a record-breaking 3.92 tonnes of glass, which is around 13,700 bottles! This means…

  • Enough energy was saved to power a light bulb for 328,800 hours
  • Over 1.2 tonnes of CO2 emissions were diverted – every tonne of glass melted in the reproduction process saves approximately 315kg of Carbon Dioxide
  • Every tonne of recycled glass used is believed to preserve 1.3 tonnes of raw materials being used to make new glass– We saved 5.22 tonnes of valuable raw materials
  • Recycling glass reduces the demand for raw material, which no longer needs to be quarried- a massive advantage of recovering glass for recycling

… and with the help of as many volunteers as possible, we hope to collect even more glass this year!

All staff and students are encouraged to lend a hand at the following events:

The Vale: Tuesday 19th March, 12:00 – 16:00

Pritchatts Park: Wednesday 20th March, 12:00 – 14:00

Selly Oak Village: Wednesday 20th March, 14:00 – 16:00

We appreciate any time that you can spare, whether you can help out at all of the above events or just for your lunch break. All we ask that you have an abundance of energy and some comfy shoes!
