Oscars 2017 winners banner

This year’s Oscars awards ceremony was held in the splendid setting of the Great Hall; once again recognising and rewarding staff achievements and customer service from the year just gone.

This year’s theme was Indian summer and the scene was set with a performance by Nachda-Sansar - bhangra dancers and dhol drummers. A delicious banquet was served by external caterers, Mehirs – and the entire HAS team looked the part with orange garlands, bindis and henna hand art.

For the first time this year, there were no Highly Commended awards. Instead there was recognition that everyone who had been shortlisted from the 400 nominations was a winner, who had made either an individual or collective effort, to go the extra mile and exceed expectations.

We made £1453.00 on the sale of raffle tickets. All proceeds are going to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital charity, to support their fundraising efforts.

Photos from the night can be found here and for those of you interested the quiz and answers are also available. Thanks again the Oscars Committee, for making this year’s event such a success.

Business Excellence
Hockey Performance Support Team, from UB Sport

The Hockey Performance Support Team has faced the challenge of having to support our Women’s Hockey 1st team whilst they were juggling their studies, training, competing and representing GB across the Globe. The Team and key practitioners used a new online delivery model, incl. Apps on the athletes’ phones to monitor their daily wellbeing and training. All this ensured the athletes were fit and well to compete for their country whilst succeeding with their academic studies.

Newcomer of the Year
Mark Burns from UB Sport

Mark has demonstrated true excellence whilst he has been with us, from planning and organisation, right through to the actual delivery of services. He is supportive of others, proactive in finding solutions and he always tries to provide the best support service and experience to our student athletes. Mark is a strong team player, he is always positive and the Strengthening & Conditioning programme would have crumbled during certain pinch points this year if it wasn’t for Mark. He has been an outstanding newcomer.

HAS Supporter of the Year
Emily Owen, Vulnerable Students officer from Student Services

Emily's role is to support students who are at their most vulnerable. A vast number of students need support whilst living and studying with us; over the last 5 years, Emily has repeatedly changed the lives of these students through her support and commitment.  Emily's role often goes unnoticed, but she deserves recognition for the support she provides to students, and her colleagues in HAS. She fully deserves to be recognised as our HAS Supporter of the Year.

Student Experience
Med school Café from Catering Operations

The Catering Team at the Medical School has had an interesting 18 months with the flooding and the subsequent refurbishment of their unit.  But no matter what, they always put the student experience first.  Everyone in the team provides an excellent service in a very busy catering environment.  Matthew, Carl and all of the team do an excellent job and deserve recognition for what they have achieved in improving the Student Experience at the Medical School.

Going Above and Beyond
Steve Jennings from Security Services

Steve Jennings is brilliant with event organisers.  He puts people at ease, but is also firm and he can handle difficult situations like children running around and party goers being slightly worse for wear, - he does it with equal professionalism and diplomacy.  Steve has also been known for removing the odd pigeon when needed.  At one event Steve was telling delegates all about the history of the Aston Webb building which everyone loved.  It is reassuring when Steve is on duty; you just know he will go above and beyond to deliver a successful event.

Most Inspirational Leader
Lily Badger

Lily’s nomination reads …When people ask me “What is it like working at the University?”  I say 'I love my job because I have a great manager’.  Lily is passionate about her role and she is always striving to ensure that everyone is being the best they can be. She has time for everyone and I've learnt through Lily that it's OK to be nervous, ask for help and indeed make mistakes.  Lily has taught me that it's not about hiding away when things get tough, but how we need to get out there and face it. She's funny, positive and always approachable. Lily is an inspirational leader.

Team Spirit
Collaborative teams of venuebirmingham, Chefs, Porters, Bramall, Security , Cleaners and Freshthinking

During a two week period in early spring our VB Sales and Events team delivered 10 major conferences and events. To ensure the successful delivery of these, a great deal of planning, attention to detail and collaboration was needed from various HAS operational teams to make sure each event ran seamlessly. The teams that came together included Venue Birmingham sales and events, Bramall, Porters, Security, Cleaners , Chefs and Fresh Thinking.  Between them they delivered an excellent service which was evident from the positive feedback received from many of the organisers involved.

Every team member was committed to delivering a great customer experience and working together to deliver the best results, showing great Team Spirit.
