We don't byte - Coding Club

“We don’t byte” Coding Club: a peer-learning community for postgraduate researchers at The University of Birmingham.

This Special Interest Group at the University of Birmingham is a cross-College collaboration of postgraduate researchers (PGRs) to help people to improve programming skills through seminars and workshop activities.

Publishing code is a subject that can seem daunting when starting out on your PGR-journey. For some, this might be the first time they have had to take up a coding language. For others, there might be a central repository in your research group which you are expected to build upon. Even for those who might already be familiar in one or more languages, the task of making your code available for others to utilise can be intimidating. But instead of tackling these complex problems alone, you can now turn to a supportive community of peers.

All we expect from you is an enthusiasm to develop code, engage in discussions and if you have any thoughts on future sessions, to bring them along!

We try to meet up during the academic year on a fortnightly occasion (once every two weeks). Sessions can include (but are not limited to):

-        Coding Show and Tell: What code languages do you use and why do you use them?

-        Code structure: advice from the industry

-        Getting started with version control and Git

-        How to be more open access?

-        Coding licences and how to choose

-        README and run: getting your code running on an independent computer

You can check out what we get up to on our blog (coming soon!).

We are dedicated to building a diverse, collaborative, and welcoming community of code developers and data scientists.
