Landscaping the Green Heart

The first steps towards creating the Green Heart that will transform the centre of campus began in July. We are working closely with contractors to minimise disruption on campus.

Over the coming weeks, we can expect to see the continued demolition of the former library which will be completed in early October. Landscaping will then begin on this site behind the current hoardings. In this time, the University Crests have also been successfully removed from the building, and are now safely packed to be sent to expert restorers who will return the Crests to their former glory. They will then be incorporated back at the ‘heart’ of campus in the new parkland. The coping stones have also been taken off the top of the building to be reused and incorporated in the Green Heart at a later stage. Temporary footpaths and ramps will be installed from 18 - 21 September following the erection of hoardings in the section of University Square closest to the Arts Building. Landscaping the East side of the Sqaure will be completed in January 2018. Protection has been erected around the Square’s trees so they are not damaged during landscaping.

Our commitment to staff and students is to ensure we provide timely and accurate information about what those changes are, and what alternative routes are best to take around campus; including disabled access. This will be done in a variety of ways, including signage on campus, Twitter, blog posts and this webpage; all will be regularly updated.

Phase 1: September 2017 – January 2018

The section of University Square closest to the Arts Building and the former library will be cordoned off and temporary hoardings erected from late August for landscaping, with completion due in January 2018. Demolition of the former library will also take place during this time and will be completed in October. Generally speaking, demolition work will be carried out between 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays, however there is a chance that some work may take place on weekends. We are aware that there will be disruption to those on campus during this demolition; which will be unavoidable. We thank you for your patience and support during this period. Temporary pathways and ramps will be provided where appropriate and disabled access will be maintained.

The image below demonstrates the area that will be cordoned off from late August.

The cordon will be removed in November 2017.

Phase 2: February – June 2018

Phase two will see the other side of University Square cordoned off in order for landscaping to take place in this section. Temporary pathways and ramps will be provided where appropriate and disabled access will be maintained.

Accessibility during construction

Accessibility around University Square, the new Library and the former library site will be maintained throughout the works with the installation of temporary ramp systems. All routes will be clearly signposted. This will ensure that everyone can navigate the new routes easily and safely. We are also working with colleagues with specific accessibility needs to guarantee that they are prepared for the changes.

If you have any specific requirements or concerns around accessibility due to disability or visual impairment, please email the Green Heart team at greenheart@contacts.bham.ac.uk and we will be happy to help.
