Landscaping the Green Heart

Steps towards creating the Green Heart, that will transform the centre of campus, began in July 2017. We are working closely with contractors to minimise disruption on campus.

The demolition of the former library is now complete and landscaping has begun on the site behind the current hoardings; which includes the creation of an amphitheatre and café. The transformation of the first phase of University Square is also drawing to a close and will be completed by mid-February (weather dependent). Since August 2017, the redeveloped space has had new lighting, benches and pathways installed, as well as the first of 160 new trees across the Green Heart. In the coming weeks, work will begin on the west side of the Square until June.

Our commitment to staff and students is to ensure we provide timely and accurate information about what changes are to come, and what alternative routes are best to take around campus whilst construction is taking place; including disabled access. This will be done in a variety of ways, including signage on campus, Twitter, blog posts and this webpage; all will be regularly updated. You can also find detailed fortnightly summaries of construction works taking place on site here.

Phase 2: February - June 2018

The section of University Square closest to Staff House will soon be cordoned off and temporary hoardings will be gradually installed by mid-February (weather dependent). Temporary pathways and ramps will be provided where appropriate and disabled access will be maintained. These new routes are highlighted in red on the map below. Areas marked in green will be under construction and inaccessible to the public. The hoardings will be removed in June and University Square will be fully accessible once more.

Accessibility during construction

Accessibility around University Square, the library and Green Heart construction site will be maintained throughout the works with the installation of temporary ramp systems and pathways. All routes will be clearly signposted. This will ensure that everyone can navigate the new routes easily and safely. We are also working with colleagues with specific accessibility needs to guarantee that they are prepared for the changes.

If you have any specific requirements or concerns around accessibility due to disability or visual impairment, please email the Green Heart team at and we will be happy to help.
