Landscaping the Green Heart

Steps towards creating the Green Heart, that will transform the centre of campus, began in July 2017 and will be completed late 2018 - early 2019. We are working closely with contractors to minimise disruption on campus.

The demolition of the former library is now complete and landscaping has begun on the site behind the current hoardings; which includes the creation of an amphitheatre. 230 tonnes of bridge components have now been pieced together on the former library site, and the walls for the new café are being installed. The creation of rain gardens and tree planting has also begun, as well as laying new pathways. The transformation of University Square is also complete and includes new lighting, benches and pathways, as well as 13 of 160 new trees across the Green Heart. Reseeding and planting the rain gardens is now ongoing across the whole site.

Our commitment to staff and students is to ensure we provide timely and accurate information about what changes are to come, and alternative routes around campus whilst construction is taking place; including disabled access. This will be done in a variety of ways, including signage on campus, Twitterblog posts and this webpage; all will be regularly updated. We are also implementing a series of actions that should reduce disruption as much as possible during the study and exam period this year.

Summer 2018 construction

From Saturday 14 July to Friday 21 September, pathways between Muirhead Tower (R21) and the Arts Building (R16) will close. There will be no public access along these pathways and as a result, building access from these pathways will also be closed. This vital work is taking place to enable the team to repave the footpaths and car park in this area. Alternative routes will be clearly signposted throughout the works. This construction has been programmed to commence after degree congregations in July 2018 and be completed before Welcome Week in September 2018.

The map below outlines the alternative routes during these works and further details can be found here.

Accessibility during construction

Accessibility around the former library and North Car Park construction site will be maintained throughout the works with the installation of temporary ramp systems and pathways where required. All routes will be clearly signposted. This will ensure that everyone can navigate the new routes easily and safely. We are also working with colleagues with specific accessibility needs to guarantee that they are prepared for the changes.

If you have any specific requirements or concerns around accessibility due to disability or visual impairment, please email the Green Heart team at greenheart@contacts.bham.ac.uk and we will be happy to help.
