Steps towards creating the Green Heart, that will transform the centre of campus, began in July 2017. We are working closely with contractors to minimise disruption on campus.
The demolition of the former library is now complete and landscaping has begun on the site behind the current hoardings; which includes the creation of an amphitheatre. 230 tonnes of bridge components have now been pieced together on the former library site, and the walls for the new café are being installed. The creation of rain gardens and tree planting has also begun. The transformation of the first phase of University Square is also complete and now includes new lighting, benches and pathways, as well as the first of 160 new trees across the Green Heart. Reseeding and planting rain gardens has now begun across the Square. Work is also well underway on the west side of the Square and will reopen in June.
Our commitment to staff and students is to ensure we provide timely and accurate information about what changes are to come, and alternative routes around campus whilst construction is taking place; including disabled access. This will be done in a variety of ways, including signage on campus, Twitter, blog posts and this webpage; all will be regularly updated. You can also find detailed fortnightly summaries of construction works taking place on site here. We are also implementing a series of actions that should reduce disruption as much as possible during the study and exam period this year.
Phase 2: February - June 2018
The section of University Square closest to Staff House is now cordoned off and temporary hoardings have been installed. Temporary pathways and ramps are provided where appropriate and disabled access has been maintained. All new routes are highlighted in red on the map below. Areas marked in green are under construction and inaccessible to the public. The hoardings will be removed in June and University Square will be fully accessible once more.
Accessibility during construction
Accessibility around University Square, the library and Green Heart construction site will be maintained throughout the works with the installation of temporary ramp systems and pathways. All routes will be clearly signposted. This will ensure that everyone can navigate the new routes easily and safely. We are also working with colleagues with specific accessibility needs to guarantee that they are prepared for the changes.
If you have any specific requirements or concerns around accessibility due to disability or visual impairment, please email the Green Heart team at email@example.com and we will be happy to help.
