As Director of HAS, Stuart is responsible for ensuring that all our products and services support the academic ambitions for the University. This covers a diverse portfolio that ranges from; cleaning and waste management, conferences and events, delivering the University’s post, providing great student accommodation and catering, day nurseries, security, Winterbourne House & Garden to ensuring we remain at the pinnacle of University sport in the UK.

Peter overseas a small team responsible for waste management across both campuses and the Shakespeare Institute, including hazardous and clinical waste, a number of recycling services and monitoring the quality standards of cleaning provided by Cleaning Services. The team is also responsible for various soft facilities management services including pest control, window cleaning and a number of washroom services.

Tim manages the Living team in the University Centre. His main responsibility is to ensure that University accommodation is fully occupied and provides an excellent student experience from application through to allocation of accommodation and beyond.  The team also help students find accommodation off campus, and provides a liaison point for students living in the community.


Sarah Wood - Cleaning Services Operations Manager

Sarah manages a large team of staff who are responsible for the cleaning on Main Campus and Students Accommodation, as well as car parking on the Vale Village during Welcome Week. During the summer vacation period her team is responsible for deep cleaning of all student accommodation, as well as providing cleaning services to conferences that may be booked into accommodation. Her team is also responsible for Car Parking on the Vale Village during Welcome Weekend.


Zena Wooldridge OBE - Director of Sport

Zena is the University’s lead on strategic and business planning across all aspects of non-academic sport, including sports facility planning, management and development, performance sport, fitness and well-being, student sports clubs, participation sport, volunteering through sport, outdoor activities, and delivery and promotion of sporting events.

Carolyn heads the Operational Team driving to deliver all commercial aspects of the business. This includes all  key income-generating, customer-facing functions; programmes & services, including facilities; membership services; active lifestyles programme; health & wellbeing and volunteering. The Business Development and Marketing team also falls under Carolyn’s remit focusing on membership recruitment, facility and class occupancy and the attraction of targeted events in order to achieve income targets. This team will be paramount when we open to the new sports building.

Norman leads the on-going development of the Raymond Priestley Centre and the programmes it provides, ensuring the delivery of outstanding learning experiences for students and staff. He teaches a wide range of programmes and activities, from team skills to outdoor pursuit’s courses and has three direct reports.


Alex Taylor - Performance & Coaching Manager

Alex heads up the Hi Performance Centre, the only interdisciplinary sports science and sports medicine unit in the West Midlands, which provides specialist support services to athletes (students, staff and community). She also oversees the University’s sports scholarship programme and the THRIVE health and fitness services team within the University.

Monica is responsible for the management and strategic development of the University’s Post, Portering and Transport Services. This includes a fleet of over 100 vehicles, all externally hired vehicles and mini buses, imports and exports and logistical movements across the University.

Lee is responsible for the management and operations of Winterbourne House & Garden, an arts and crafts property and 7 acre botanic garden open to the public 7 days a week. The House and Garden team of 20 staff provide a first class visitor experience. Winterbourne is also home to public engagement projects for the local and University community, such as staff and student grow clubs.

Paula is responsible for the business and development of all childcare operations within the University. This consists of two day nurseries, The Elms based on Edgbaston Park Road and The Oaks which is based at our Selly Oak campus. Each nursery provides over 115 childcare places for children aged 3 months -5 years. The nursery team consists of 2 managers, a practitioner team of 60 and 5 domestic staff.

I am responsible for the University of Birmingham | Conferences and events teams (sales, marketing and events),  and the Bramall Venue Management team which incorporates Aston Webb Reception. As a team we drive sales, coordinate and deliver conferences and events across a diverse range of facilities and services available to us. We also support student, staff and University events when required to do so.

Sally is responsible for a team of 7 which ensures the smooth running of all conferences and events that take place at the University. This ranges from gala dinners, conferences, day meetings, bed and breakfast, Sunday lunches, weddings and outdoor activities.

Martin is responsible for the day to day facilities management of the Bramall Music Building and meeting the requirements of all users including the music department and University of Birmingham | Conferences and events. He is supported by an experienced senior events technician and also manages the Aston Webb Reception team, who are often the first point of contact for people visiting the university.

As Director of Catering Nic has overall responsibility for all catering services on campus ensuring we are delivering a fresh quality product and first class service experience to our staff, students and visitors on a daily basis. This incorporates a wide range of services from vending machines to coffee shops, on-site restaurants, event dining, functions, students meals and licensed bar operations.

I am the Hospitality Manager for Catering within HAS and my area of responsibility include Staff House, which includes a fine dining restaurant, conference rooms, self-service restaurant, coffee lounge and a bar.

I also look after Fresh Thinking which is a delivered catering service to anyone around campus both internal or external customers delivering a range of product from tea / coffee for 10 people up to buffets for 2000 people or large formal dinners in the Great Hall up to 450 people.

I also look after branded coffee outlets, Starbucks in Muirhead Tower, Costa Coffee in the Bramall Music Auditorium Foyer, the coffee / bar in the Munrow Sports Centre plus any bars on the main University Campus. 

Jointly responsible for the overall running of the Conference Park, including: reception, housekeeping, maintenance, and conference facilitation also: facilities management in liaison with Estates, Grounds, H&S.

Louise Sherratt is the Catering Operations Manager for campus responsible for 19 catering outlets across campus.

These include large catering facilities at the Medical School and University Centre, Go Central, Go Mex,Café Go  offering a large range of hot food from 8.00am – 6.00pm during term time. Other areas are the Costa store in University Centre and coffee shop environments located all over campus based in the Library , Business School, Biosciences, Physics and several other colleges.

Louise also manages the 90 vending machines on campus and the stores department.

Mark has overall responsibility for all food production across the university and oversees all food purchasing and staff management, whilst ensuring the final standards and expected quality of food is achieved in all outlets at all times. Mark assist’s and provides strategic direction in the development of food production and catering services by suggesting ways of improving methods of service and the introduction of catering concepts. Mark provides advice and guidance to colleagues across the university in matters of hygiene, kitchen planning, menu planning, promotions and kitchen management and is the central point of contact for the university in all aspects of food production management.
