About

High performance computing enables and enhances great research, which the University of Birmingham provides through BEAR. The BEAR postgraduate research student conference is a special event for all research students to present work which BEAR, and the sister HPC clusters Baskerville and Sulis, has made possible.

Our aim is to create an open and engaging environment to stimulate the exchange of ideas between different fields. In particular, the workshop will give young researchers from diverse areas the opportunity to establish the necessary interdisciplinary connections to actively participate in research within high performance cluster environments.

The theme of the conference is: high performance cluster environments for research.

We want to hear how your work has been shaped by previous research, current goals and how it will influence the future. Whether quantitative or qualitative, our hope is that this opportunity will provide a chance to discuss cross-cutting topics such as next generation technology, ethics and fairness, and knowledge dissemination.

Keynote Speakers

We are extremely excited to welcome a selection of invited keynote speakers who are leaders in their research fields, from multiple disciplines across the BEAR facilities.

Further details will be announced when speakers are confirmed.

Oral Presentations

We are welcoming a small number of attendees to give an oral presentation about their research. Depending on the number of speakers, the talks may take between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Flash Presentations

In addition, we invite attendees to give a 3 minute flash presentation. Due to the short form of these presentations, we are able to welcome far more presenters. These presentations should be accompanied by 1-3 slides, or, if the person is also presenting a poster, they may choose to use their poster as a slide. Flash presentations are an excellent opportunity to gain experience doing public speaking and for people at the beginning of a research project.

Poster Presentations

Attendees are welcome to bring an A1 poster displaying their research, which they may present at a poster session.

Why should I enter?

This is a unique opportunity to raise your research profile and engage a public audience. The committee challenges you to consider your research and how it can be creatively captured and communicated to a non-specialist audience.

The BEAR PGR Conference is a friendly and welcoming event where you can:

  • present your research results with a talk or poster in a relaxed environment
  • meet other postgraduate researchers from different groups
  • learn how innovative research techniques are being used across various research fields.
