NAG and Hector National Service workshop

From Tuesday to Thursday (14-16 October 2008 ) a free-of-charge three-day MPI training course in conjunction with the HECToR National Service and NAG  was open to all members of the University and attracted over 40 delegates.

Eligibility

This course was fully subscribed. To express interest in possible future courses please email bearinfo@contacts.bham.ac.uk with your name and contact details. Due to the funding of this course, preference was given to members of the University and external delegates working on projects that could be funded by BBSRC, EPSRC or NERC.

Agenda

The agenda was:

Day 1 10.00am - 5.00pm : Introduction to HPC and MPI
Introduction to HPC - terminology, architecture, hardware, communication, libraries, batch systems, HECToR, etc and a brief mention of OpenMP
Introduction to MPI - basic concepts and overview and introductory exercise.

Day 2 9.00am - 5.00pm : Communication in MPI
Point-to-point (blocking and non-blocking) and collective communication. Several practical exercises.

Day 3  9.00am - 4.00pm : Advanced MPI
Cartesian Topologies, derived data types, user-defined binary operators, groups and communicators. Exercises on each.
