Know your neighbour – Nick S. Potter
I first started teaching on the Birmingham MBA in 1993 and have taught strategic management on the various programmes ever since, in the UK, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. Over the years, my teaching has widened, to include modules on a number of MSc programmes.
During that time, I was employed as a part time visiting lecturer, but on the 1st July this year, after a 20 year probationary period, I took up a full time post as a Senior Lecturer. I am also the director of the new MSc International Business programme in Singapore which began at the end of April. My background is in business and I enjoy helping students to understand how the theories and concepts can be applied to real organisations, resulting in enhanced performance. I love to see the light come on in their eyes!
I live in a tiny village in rural Shropshire in a barn conversion, which is an interesting combination of character and modern convenience. I enjoy DIY, which is just as well, living in an old building, but I have also built a wardrobe into one of the bedrooms as well as a storage unit in the sitting room. I like to be outside as much as possible, whether gardening or walking in the beautiful countryside surrounding the village. It is quite possible to complete a two hour circular walk without seeing another person.
I love most types of music and play piano and guitar, although I have lapsed a little. I also enjoy reading, mainly historical novels set in the late 19th century through to the second-world-war, as this was a period of such immense technological change and upheaval in society. I recently completed and published a biography of my grandfather who lived through much of that era and saw the human race move from horse power to space travel.
I have three sons, who live and work in London and New York.
