Gender, Sexuality, and Islamophobia: Pressing Questions for Education Policy

BREP is delighted to host three leading figures who will explore these themes through their research:

Dr Fida Sanjakdar, Monash University
School Based Sexuality Education, Islamophobia and Citizenship: Exploring the Views of Australian Muslim Youth

Dr Saba Hussain, University of Birmingham
Gendered Islamophobia and Muslim girls’ education in India

Professor Karl Kitching, University of Birmingham
The use of secularist arguments for and against LGBTQ-inclusive education in news media

The questions and issues explored are likely to be among the most important for the future of education in Britain and beyond. We hope you will join us to discuss them.

Format

After a brief introduction by the BREP co-directors, each speaker will talk for around 15 minutes. Participants will then have an opportunity to digest the talks, ask questions and make comments. The final part of the event will consist of a group discussion before the BREP co-directors conclude the session.

Criteria for participation

The event is open to academic researchers (including postgraduate researchers) and anyone working in a relevant area, such as teachers, Third Sector practitioners, and local policymakers. You must register for the event, stating your role and organisation. Places will be limited so registration does not guarantee attendance. If you are invited to attend, you will receive an email confirming this and giving you further details.

Please note that participation is contingent upon respecting the University’s commitment to freedom of speech and ensuring that academic spaces remain safe spaces for scholarly pursuits including addressing sensitive and/or controversial issues.

Please register your interest to attend.
