Dr Robin May, Lister Fellow and Reader in Infectious Disease in the School of Biosciences, has been awarded the Biochemical Society’s 2013 Colworth Medal for his research on human infectious diseases.

The Colworth Medal is a prestigious annual award for outstanding research by a young biochemist of any nationality who has carried out the majority of their work in the United Kingdom. Donated in 1963 by Unilever Research Colworth Laboratory, the award is made to a scientist who is aged 35 or under.

It’s a huge honour to be awarded the Colworth Medal" says Dr May "and more than a little daunting to read some of the names on the list of previous winners. Since being at Birmingham, I’ve been privileged to work with a superb team of people in my group, so the award is a well-deserved accolade for all of their efforts over the last eight years.

Dr May’s research focuses on the molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions. His research group combines high-resolution microscopy with molecular and genetic approaches to probe the events that underlie establishment and spread of fungal and bacterial infections in patients with impaired immunity .

As part of his award, Dr May will deliver a lecture at a conference of the Society on 21st February and at Unilever Research Laboratories. The lecture will also be published in Biochemical Society Transactions.
