Embedding public engagement with research

The University has received funding from Research Councils UK (RCUK) over the next 12 months to embed public engagement with research (PER) into procedure and practice. As one of a growing number of HEI ‘Catalysts’ committed to culture change in this area, Birmingham will work to create sustainable resources and a new training programme for its researchers, focusing on public engagement as one of the routes to research impact. All researchers and supporting staff are encouraged to participate in upcoming opportunities to build capacity for public engagement at University and to create networks within the institution to share good practice, celebrate work and ensure that those involved in public engagement are supported.

A workshop programme for PER is under development in consultation with researchers and support staff across the five Colleges. This will work in partnership with the Research Planning team’s programme of activity. Work will also be done to promote best practice that recognises the two-way nature of PER and on raising the level of reward and recognition for PER activity.

To feed into the consultation process or to be kept informed of upcoming events (anticipated for early 2016) please contact the newly appointed PER Officer, Caroline Gillett: c.d.t.gillett@bham.ac.uk.
