Following last summer’s unforgettable Commonwealth Games, 'Birmingham Festival 23' is a chance to relive the magic and memories of 2022. The free 10-day festival begins in Birmingham's Centenary Square on Friday 28 July and runs till Sunday 6 August 2023.

The free 10-day outdoor festival is taking over Centenary Square tonight, with lots of live music, performance and have-a-go activities on big screens for everyone to enjoy.

The University is principal partner of Festival 23 and is contributing to the programme with free exhibitions and public workshops hosted at The Exchange.

Professor Alice Roberts is talking about her novel, Wolf Road, on Friday 4 August, and Soul City Arts is creating an interactive installation called NOMAD on Thursday 3 August.

Professor Richard Black, Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Birmingham, said:

“The University is proud to have been an official partner of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and is now very excited to be building on the cultural legacy in the city as a principal partner of Birmingham Festival 23.

“The event supports the objectives of Culture Forward – a new initiative that aims to bring the University, the city, and Birmingham’s cultural organisations into even closer and more creative conjunction – alongside our work to engage with the public and our communities as part of our civic commitment.”

Highlights include a Sense Wellbeing Sound Bath every weekday morning. Open to everyone, this offers accessible activities in partnership with the charity for people with complex disabilities.

There’s also Power Hour - a fun workout for everyone and at your own pace; Twilight Takeover - free live performances as the sun sets; and Perry’s Party Picnic - the opportunity to meet Perry, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games mascot.

No tickets are required so don’t miss out on the celebration of Birmingham’s creativity and diversity, coming together in an inclusive space for everyone to watch, listen, relax, dance and play.
