Edgbaston Park Hotel is making significant strides toward becoming one of Birmingham’s most environmentally conscious hotels.

The hotel achieved a prestigious gold ECOsmart award, solidifying its commitment to sustainability.

ECOsmart is the premier accreditation system for hotels and meeting venues worldwide, delivered by sustainable solutions provider Greengage.

The hotel’s dedicated team has implemented a range of measures to fully embrace environmental sustainability. Their efforts have been rewarded not only with the ECOsmart award but also with a gold Green Tourism award last year.

Julie Crump, Director of Operations, said: “I’m proud! Not only is it a recognition of all the hard work by the team to drive forward sustainable initiatives, but it recognises the values of our business to be a positive influence on our people and community. There’s a lot more we want to achieve, and this gives us the boost to continue, with the recognition that we are moving the business in the right direction.”

Some of the hotel’s sustainability initiatives which were reviewed by Greengage experts include:

  • Reducing single-use plastic: They’ve replaced sauce sachets with planet-friendly condiments by Tracklements and eliminated single-serve jars at breakfast to reduce glass waste.

  • Efficient energy use: The hotel employs LED lighting, motion sensors, and other energy-saving measures.

  • Eco-friendly toiletries: In guest rooms, you’ll find refillable toiletries, helping to contribute to waste reduction.

  • Community involvement: Staff members are given time to volunteer for a charity of their choice twice a year. Notably, the team raised an impressive £1,000 for the Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust during the hotel’s annual Family Fun Day.

  • Sustainable Beverage Choices: The hotel proudly stocks sustainable drinks, including vegan wines and alcohol-free beers. You can also find Paddy & Scott’s coffee stocked across the hotel and bedrooms. Every coffee bag sold provides one meal for a child in coffee growing regions. The hotel contributed to 544 lunch box meals.

  • Zero Waste to Landfill: The hotel has stablished a seamless waste management system, including regular reviews of buffet wastage, the addition of a food waste bin in the staff canteen, and strategically placed bins throughout the hotel for guests to separate their food, general, and mixed recycling.
