Types of disablity

Digital accessbility includes all disabilities that affect access to websites and apps.  By following accessibility principles we can ensure that people with a range of capability  do not face barriers that prevent them from using websites and mobile apps.

Disabilities to consider

  • physical
  • speech
  • visual
  • auditory
  • cognitive

Temporary disabilities

There are times when visitors may be faced with a temporary disability for example:

  • A hand injury
  • Ear infection
  • Lost glasses

Situational disabilities

Disabilities that prevent a visitor from accessing your site or app can arise from the environment or situation they are in. For example:

  • Using a phone in bright sunlight
  • An environment that is loud or distracting
  • Environments where you are not allowed to listen to audio
  • Stressful situations where processing information can be difficult

Other benefits

There are a number of other audiences that benefit from well designed accessibile apps and websites.

  • Older visitors with changing abilities
  • Visitors who do are new to the English language
  • People who have a slow internet connection
