Exemptions and disproportionate burden

Equality Act 2010

Even if you’re exempt from the new regulations, or believe that you have a case for a disproportionate burden, you’re still legally required to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities when they’re needed  under the Equality Act 2010 - e.g. by providing the information they need in an accessible format.

Exemptions

Some sites and apps may be considered exempt from the new legislation.

If you believe that your site or app is exempt please contact Jon Winterbourn (IT Services)

Disprortionate burden

You may not have to meet the accessibility requirements if doing so would be a disproportionate burden - e.g. if it’s very expensive to make even simple changes and those changes would bring very limited benefits to people with a disability.

Please note: it would be difficult for an institution of the size of the University of Birmingham to show disproportionate burden.
