Dr Jane Collins

Former Chief Executive, Marie Curie Cancer Care

Jane can help students who are interested in careers in charities/third sector and healthcare.

Dr Collins qualified in medicine at Birmingham University, becoming a consultant paediatric neurologist at Guy's Hospital in 1991 and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in 1994. She was awarded an MD in 1988 for work at the UCL Institute of Child Health and an MSc in Biochemistry at King’s College, London. She is an honorary fellow of UCL.

Dr Collins was the National Director of the UK Newborn Blood Spot Screening Programme Centre while medical director at GOSH. She stepped down from the role soon after she became Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in 2001.

Jane was Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity for 11 years. She played a role in securing the University of London’s Computer Centre for research in to genetic diseases and also in GOSH achieving Foundation Trust status in 2012.

She joined Marie Curie as Chief Executive in September 2012, stepping down in February 2019. Marie Curie provides care for dying people across the UK through its hospices and community nursing services. In both her clinical and management careers at GOSH and Marie Curie, Dr Collins has focused on improving both the quality and safety of care, as well as supporting new research and treatment programmes. Marie Curie is the largest charity funder of research in to palliative care in the UK.

Jane now works part time. She is a Trustee of the King’s Fund, an influential health and care think tank, and a non executive director of University College London Hospitals.
