Right to Study Checks

If you are an overseas student at the University of Birmingham, you are required to have a Right to Study (RTS) Check before you start your studies.

This is a face-to-face meeting with a member of the International Student Advisory Service (ISAS), who will check your passport and your immigration documents for the UK. Normally, this will only take a few minutes. When the RTS Check is complete, you will be issued with your student ID Card and can start your studies.

What documents do I need to bring to an RTS Check?

You will need to bring your current passport and any immigration documents from the Home Office and United Kingdom Visa and Immigration (UKVI). This may include your 30 day entry clearance vignette, your Biometric Residence Permit card, and any other documentation that UKVI have issued to you.

We also recommend that you bring your boarding passes and flight details with you to the RTS Check. If they are needed, the ISAS staff member will tell you.

If you have made a visa application from within the UK but have not received a decision, bring a printed version of the application form with you. If you forget to do this, the RTS Check will not be completed.

Welcome & Returners' Weeks

At the start of the Academic year (September & October), RTS checks take place in the International Student Zone in Chancellor's Court (by the Clock Tower) and the BRP Zone in the Nuffield Learning Centre (R9 on the University's map). You will be told which area to go to, however, staff at both locations will always be happy to help you.

Student Hub, Aston Webb Building (R7)

During the rest of the year, you can visit the Student Hub (R7 on the University's map) with your documentation. The staff in the Student Hub will be able to assist you with the RTS process and issue you an ID Card once your RTS check is complete.

ISAS Training and Compliance Team (R23)

The Training & Compliance Team may also invite you to undertake an RTS Check directly with them. This can be for many reasons and clear instructions will be given to you before your appointment. The Team is on the 3rd Floor, above the Spar shop, in University Centre (R23 on the University's map).
