The University has released a statement for Research Publications. This is to increase the visibility of research publications associated with the University and to ensure compliance with funder and REF requirements for OA.
Objectives
The objectives of this statement are:
- To increase the visibility of research publications produced by staff employed by or associated with the University of Birmingham
- To ensure that all researchers and their publications are eligible for submission to the next REF
- To preserve published content in the institutional repository for reporting and bibliometric data purposes
- To ensure researchers are compliant with funder open access requirements
Approach
Pure is the University’s Current Research Information System. Publications in Pure are in turn made available on the web via the institutional repository (UBIRA)
- All University of Birmingham researchers are expected to record bibliographic details in Pure for peer-reviewed publications, immediately on acceptance for publication. This applies to all types of research publication including articles, conference papers, reviews, books and chapters.
- In addition, all researchers are expected to deposit in Pure the full text of the final accepted draft manuscript (post-print) of all peer-reviewed journal articles and published conference proceedings, immediately on acceptance. Deposited manuscripts will, where possible, be made open access in UBIRA.
- If the publisher specifies an embargo period before open access is permitted to the full text, the document must be deposited on acceptance, but access may be deferred or restricted as required.
- In cases where the formally-published version carries a Creative Commons licence, the post-print may be replaced with the final version after publication.
- The University requirement applies to all peer-reviewed publications accepted for publication from 1st May 2015 onwards, although researchers are welcome to deposit items published earlier than this, other publication types or unpublished material.
- Whilst this requirement meets the criteria of eligibility for REF and the open access mandates of the majority of funders, it is the responsibility of the researcher to meet any other specific stipulations made by research funders as a condition of receipt of funding.
- All deposits in Pure will be checked by Professional Services staff to ensure metadata standards and policy compliance.
