Impartiality, sustainability and careers

In order to meet the full range of aspirations in our student and graduate body, Careers Network is committed to providing students and graduates with an impartial service to allow them to make their own informed choices through access to employers and professional organisations that meet our terms of advertising. Careers Network’s terms of advertising exist to uphold a duty of care and to ensure that students and graduates have the widest possible range of opportunities that comply with employment law and university regulations.

We support students and graduates to make informed decisions about careers and to discover different routes and pathways which align with their knowledge, attributes, skills and experiences. Impartiality is, therefore, a core component of our work, but we recognise that in some areas Careers Network’s engagement may not always align with an individual’s values or ethics. However, in order to meet the full range of aspirations in our student and graduate body, we will not seek to maintain blanket bans on a particular organisation, industry or geography unless it is covered by broader political scenarios or University policy.

As a member of AGCAS (the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) our service is underpinned by the AGCAS Code of Ethics. See also AGCAS: HE careers professionals and impartiality.

Sustainability

Careers Network’s information and resources on the environment and sustainability can be seen at Insight into environment and sustainability careers. This is an area of ongoing development, recognising the importance of the growing sector of green jobs and careers. Careers Network is looking to further identify the green credentials of employers registering with its career management system (for the promotion of vacancies and events). These will be compulsory fields to be completed by employers upon registering with the system and will be made available to students searching on the system.

Careers Network is also committed to more sustainable events and activity (limited/no paper resources, ethically sourced cotton bags, no plastic giveaways or plastic cups), which is in line with the University’s sustainability agenda and regularly communicated to our employer partners, many of whom are members of the Sustainable Recruitment Alliance.
