British Online Archives

  •  The Collapse of the Ottoman Empire  and the Partition of the Middle East, 1879-1919. This collection is drawn from the personal papers of Mark Sykes (1879-1919), a politician and diplomatic advisor famous for his role in the partition of the Middle East around the period of the First World War.
  • British Communism through Committee work The Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) spawned many different committees throughout its turbulent lifetime. This collection contains the papers of numerous different committees established to advise the Executive Committee on party policy and ongoing developments in their respective fields.
  • British Communism in campaigns and events This collection contains documents relating to discrete campaigns and events organised by the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) during the period 1947-1991. The documents include minutes, correspondence, press releases, posters, and programmes.
  • British Women Trade Unionists on Strike at Bryant & May The matchwomen who were employed by Bryant and May went on strike over their working conditions in 1888. Their strike is historically significant due to the fact that it was led by working class women, many of whom were immigrants from Ireland. The year of the strike and the women's relationship to London dockworkers have also led to the suggestion that their strike may in fact mark the beginning of New Unionism. These papers combine business records from Bryant and May with press coverage of the strike and photographs of the women who were involved.
  • Gender, feminism and the British Left This collection contains records compiled by the Communist Party of Great Britain's (CPGB) Women's Department during the period 1944-1991. These records include minutes, agendas, and promotional materials from various women's campaigns, events, and conferences. They also include copies of Link, the party's women's magazine, and Red Rag, a controversial journal published by the party's more militant feminist members. Together, these items provide a unique insight into the relationship between Western communism and the women's liberation movement during the post-war era.
  • The East India Company: Corrupt Governance and Cruelty in India The First Earl of Minto, Sir Gilbert Elliot Murray Kynynmound, served as Governor-General of India from 1806-1813. This collection is drawn from his personal papers during his time as premier of the East India Company (EIC), with extensive correspondence with other officials, papers from the political department, papers from the secret department, and files pertaining to his time as President of the Board of Control. Overall, the collection offers a top-down perspective on the brutal rule of the East India Company during the early 19th century.
  • Policy making and Revolutionary Politics This collection contains materials from the Political Bureau during the Communist Party of Great Britain’s early years of great optimism and hope, to the Political Committee that helped toe-the-line for the Soviet Union during the Cold War and eventually collapsed with it.
  • The East India Company: Laying the Foundations for British Colonial Domination of India This collection is of the greatest importance to those who wish fully to explore the often controversial events that preceded, accompanied, and followed the establishment of Britain's Indian empire during the mid-eighteenth century .
  • BBC handbooks, annual reports and accounts, 1927-2002 This collection contains handbooks, annual reports and accounts published by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) between 1927 and 2002.

  • Communisms and the Cold War, 1944-1986 This collection contains reports and other records compiled by the Communist Party of Great Britain's (CPGB) International Department between 1944 and 1986—a period which begins immediately after the dissolution of the Communist International (Comintern) and ends shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
  • British Labour Party Papers, 1906-1969 The Labour Party was founded in 1900 to represent the interests of trade unions and working-class voters. In political terms, it has often been characterised as a “broad church”, encompassing a range of left and centre-left viewpoints. This collection contains minutes and related records compiled by the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) during the period 1906-1969.
