Keeping your bike in good condition is an essential part of getting the best out of cycling, whether for commuting, errands or exercise. This three week course has been designed to give staff and students at University of Birmingham essential skills and knowledge to keep your bike on the road, assuming that you start as a complete beginner. The course takes place on Thursday evenings over three consecutive weeks:

Session 1: Thursday 16 Nov, 5.30-7pm

Session 2: Thursday 23 Nov, 5.30-7pm

Session 3: Thursday  30 Nov, 5.30-7pm

Location: Y3 (formerly Mechanical Engineering), G36

Booking Fee: £12/staff, £6 students

Please book your place by emailing sustainabletravel@contacts.bham.ac.uk. Places are limited. Bring your own bike if you can--demo bikes are available. 

The course will cover:

-        Naming the basic components of a bike and understand how they work

-        Performing a pre-ride check

-        Operating a track pump and inflate tyres to correct pressure

-        Adjusting the seat to the correct heightand tilt for you

-        Removing and replacing an inner tube

-        Repairing a puncture

-        Cleaning and lubricating the chain

-        Indexing gears

-        Setting up a rear derailleur

-        Fixing loose/tight headset

-        Maintaining and adjusting brakes

-        Replacing brake pads

-        Identifying when your bike needs an expert to make it safe to ride
