Bike Maintenance Skills Spring 2025

Keeping your bike in good condition is an essential part of getting the best out of cycling, whether for commuting, errands, or exercise. This three week course has been designed to give staff and students essential skills and knowledge to keep your bike on the road, assuming that you start as a complete beginner.
The course takes place on evenings over three consecutive weeks. Bring your own bike if you can - demo bikes are available.

Booking Fee: £12 staff/£6 students for the full course. Please attend all sessions.

The course will cover:
- Naming the basic components of a bike and understand how they work
- Performing a pre-ride check
- Operating a track pump and inflating tyres to correct pressure
- Adjusting the seat to the correct height and tilt for you
- Removing and replacing an inner tube
- Repairing a puncture
- Cleaning and lubricating the chain
- Indexing gears
- Setting up a rear derailleur
- Fixing loose/tight headset
- Maintaining and adjusting brakes
- Replacing brake pads
- Identifying when your bike needs an expert to make it safe to ride
