Advice from a second year student (Adrianne Bowes) about making the most of your first year at University.

The tips that I'd give to current students would be to get yourself out there as much as possible, particularly start in your first year many students leave it too late and then manage to cram internships or workshops and skills and stuff like that in the final year and the second year. I'd recommend getting internships, work experiences done as soon as possible. Go to the Careers Centre; they have all information internships on all the workshops coming up by Deloitte and anything like that. So get yourself to the Careers Centre and basically let them help you to help yourself.

Because you are in your first year, one of the things that we'd be able to help you with is finding work experience opportunities. We have a database of different opportunities that you can apply for. But we'll also help with putting a CV together and also like if you need help with the interview practice that sort of thing, you know preparing application forms, we can help you here with that. We do workshops as well, so that would help. Then also there is quite a range of different information, so if you need information about employers or just generally different career areas. Often the kind of thing that you are thinking about, you need to get relevant experience. We will be able to give you the information where to look for those kind of opportunities. You can always come back to Advice Desk and you can always see an advisor to talk through whatever issues you’ve got.
