Get Hired transcript

This is very much about getting hired, landing a graduate level job within the West Midlands, our region, our home, so the Transformation West Midlands project has given our students the opportunity to see employers that they probably wouldn't have seen, and actually opened their eyes to a wider breadth of students.

This collaboration has given us events throughout the three years and it's been really really informative for our students from UCB. Don't panic if you don't know what you want to do - start somewhere, then just explore, what do I enjoy, what do I seem to be good at, and I followed that.

You know being proud of your heritage, I think that is really really important; it is something that gives you an edge and I think the way that you look at yourself, your own mindset, whatever it is that makes you different or unique, you know, don't see that as a setback, see it as an advantage because it means that you've got more to bring to the table.

Students have grown in confidence, they've aspirations, they've been opened up to lots of different opportunities they weren't aware of. Collectively employers have also had the opportunity to meet local talent to expand their workforce and to meet local university students and graduates.

We want to be understanding that we live in a world of technology and digital and this is why businesses like myself can start talking about social media because it's readily accessible. I think the event's been really eye-opening just to see sort of the range of people that are that are on these events and the questions that they've asked - it's questions that I personally haven't really asked myself, and it's really exciting as an employer to kind of see the diversity, to see different people coming through, to hear about different experiences, so I think it's so important to keep local communities engaged and to make them aware of job opportunities that are available to them.

My biggest takeaway is to establish a growth mindset. I have contacts to the NHS now so I'm going to go home and I'm going to email them and ask about their psychological well-being practitioner job.

Get Hired has been a really successful event - we've seen growth mindset in action for the students, we've seen students picking up the mic asking questions to recruiters who they don't know, and from the employer's viewpoint they've got to speak to local students, local graduates, building their own talent pipelines within their organisation.
