Progression Coaching at the University of Birmingham video transcript

Hi my name is Ali Kazi, I studied a Bachelor’s of Science in Geography. I graduated in December of 2019.

After graduation I was struggling to get a graduate job. Corona virus hit and the graduate job market was completely gone. There was hardly any jobs available, so I decided to start my own business. I was trying to find work experience when Covid 19 hit and there was nothing available.

Lockdown was going crazy, I was stressed out not sure what I should do with my life. (My progression coach) she was always there to calm my nerves and I thought there is no opportunities for me to find work through working for organisations, so I thought I should start my own business in media production.

I’ve always had an interest for filmmaking and photography and from there onwards I decided to put all the money I had myself into launching my own business.

I signed up for progression coaching because I didn’t know what to do for my career. I was confused, I was in a limbo not knowing what I should do, where should I apply, so I thought it would be great to gain personalised help.

The most useful thing to me from Progression Coaching has been the opportunity to be given paid work experience and this work experience was actually relevant to my interests of filmmaking. I was given two opportunities. One to work for the University in video production, as well as another opportunity to work for an actual company and this was all online. This helped me because it's given me excellent, relevant work experience which has led to me being able to show my clients that, look, I’ve got professional work experience with the University of Birmingham, as well as it gave me the opportunity to use the money I’d got from this paid work experience to put aside and put into my business.

So, from it I invested in a website for my business - Golden Moment Media. It’s been very difficult since the pandemic hit and the lockdowns. There’s been no events and my business has been greatly affected by this so I decided that I should study a Masters in film and television.

(My Progression Coach) put me in touch with filmmakers she knew that also started their own business in media production and they told me that they also did the same thing. They applied for a masters in film at University and did that to be sure that if your business doesn’t work out, at least you have something to fall back on with this education to get a job in this field.

So, I have decided to do the same thing. I feel more confident now with my life opportunities, that I have completed this progression coaching programme.

I highly recommend this scheme to everyone. And that’s a wrap! Cut.
