Applications for 2023 are now closed. Applications for 2024 work experience placements will open in January.
Each year schools work experience placements within Library and Learning Resources, University of Birmingham are open to young people in years 10 to 13.
Libraries are not just about books, and these placements will give you an insight into the day-to-day workings of a modern University library. You will have a chance to work in different library teams, shadowing staff and gaining hands on experience of tasks.
What you need to know
- Applications open at the start of January and close mid-March. To apply for a schools work experience, placement please complete the online form , which will be available here from January 2024. It is important you tell us why you would like work experience in Library and Learning Resources.
- Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications outside the specified submission dates.
- Work experience placements are for five days over one week and are unpaid. We do not cover food, travel or other expenses.
- Depending upon diary dates and your areas of interest, placements will give you experience in one or more of the following:
- Customer service
- Library administration
- Study skills support
- Archives and rare books
- Online teaching and learning support
- AV Support
- Candidates will hear the outcome of their application by early April. If you have been successful, you will be forwarded a letter of confirmation, which will need to be signed and returned to us as a record of your acceptance. For applicants under 18 this will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.
- As the number of placements we can offer are limited, we are unfortunately unable to guarantee you will be offered a placement.
