Institutional membership schemes

If you are publishing your work through the 'gold' open access route, you may be eligible to have the full article processing charges covered by the central open access budget.

We have invested in a number of open access prepayment membership agreements with publishers, to make the process faster and easier for our researchers. Many provide discounts on individual article processing charges or have no additional cost at all.

  • To access a prepay scheme, please complete an APC request form for each submitted publication.
  • If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget where necessary.

 American Chemical Society (ACS)

ACS AuthorChoice ('gold' open access)

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University. If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to ACS, indicate you are from a subscribing member institution when requesting OA. This will give a discount.
  • If you are an individual member you will receive additional discount. Indicate this at submission.
  • If you are RCUK/Wellcome/COAF funded you will need to select the additional Creative Commons CC-BY licence.

 BioMed Central (BMC)

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • If the request is accepted, you will be sent the institutional code required to complete your submission. This also gives a 15% discount.
  • BMC will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • If the request is accepted, you will be sent the institutional code required to complete your submission. This also gives a 15% discount.

Cogitatio Press

Cogitatio Institutional Membership

Cogitatio has an agreement with the University, enabling our affiliated authors to publish in their journals without having to directly incur any Article Processing Charges (APC).

The agreement covers the article processing charges (APC) of all articles authored by corresponding authors of the institution. 

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • When submitting to Cogitatio as a corresponding author, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham.
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission.
  • The publisher will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Frontiers

To access prepayment scheme:

  • Complete a University APC request form. If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to Frontiers, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham. This will ensure no invoice is raised for payment.
  • Payment through the scheme gives a 5% discount.
  • Frontiers will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 IEEE

IEEE 'gold' open access 

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University. If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to IEEE, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham. This will give a 25% discount.
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission.
  • IEEE will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Open Library of the Humanities (OLH)

The University of Birmingham is a consortium member of the Open Library of Humanities - an open source academic publishing platform which supports humanities journals.

The Open Library of Humanities (OLH) is a charitable organisation dedicated to publishing open access scholarship with no author-facing article processing charges (APCs).

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to PeerJ, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham.
  • All authors need a membership to publish.
  • The University will cover fees for UoB staff only.

 Policy Press

Policy Press 'gold' open access

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • If the request is accepted, you will be sent the institutional code required to complete your submission. This also gives a 20% discount.

 Public Library of Science (PLOS)

Public Library of Science

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to PLOS, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham.
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission.
  • The publisher will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Royal Society

Royal Society 'gold' open access  

To access scheme:

  • Complete the University APC request form on submission. If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to the Royal Society, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham. This will give a 10% discount.
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission.
  • The publisher will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)

RSC Read and Publish

RSC has an agreement with the University, allowing all UoB affiliated staff listed as corresponding authors to publish open access in subscription journals that offer a Gold Open Access option for no additional cost.

To access scheme:

When submitting to RSC

  • Ensure you are listed as the corresponding author both the RSC online submission system and in your manuscript
  • Use your official institutional email address to submit your manuscript
  • State your UoB affiliation and email address in your manuscript and do not change this after submission
  • DO NOT sign the standard licence to publish during the submission process, please ignore any automatic reminders you receive
  • Once your article has been accepted for publication, complete the RSC application form, ensuring you:
    • enter your institution
    • enter ‘Au-000000’ in the voucher code field
    • agree to a CC BY or CC BY-NC open access licence (CC BY required if RCUK/COAF funded)
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission
  • The publisher will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator

 Sage

Sage 'gold' open access  

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • If the request is accepted, you will be sent the institutional code required to complete your submission. This also gives a 15% discount.
  • Sage will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Springer

SpringerOpen (fully open access journals)

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • If the request is accepted, you will be sent the institutional code required to complete your submission. This also gives a 15% discount.
  • SpringerOpen will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

Springer Open Choice

Springer has a national agreement with the University, allowing all authors  to publish open access in subscription journals that offer the Open Choice option for no additional cost.

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.
  • When submitting to Springer Open Choice, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham.
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission.
  • The publisher will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Taylor and Francis

Taylor and Francis 'gold' open access  

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University. If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to Taylor and Francis, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham. This will give a 10% discount.
  • Taylor and Francis will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 Wiley

Wiley 'gold' open access  

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • When submitting to Wiley, indicate your affiliation to the University of Birmingham. This will give a 15% discount.
  • If you are funded, indicate your funder on submission.
  • Wiley will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.

 World Scientific

To access scheme:

  • Complete an APC request form to the University.If this is approved, the OA costs will be paid through the central budget.
  • For WS journals using Aries' Editorial Manager submission system:
    • Authors will indicate whether the article will go for OA during the online submission stage

  • For WS journals not using Aries' Editorial Manager submission system:

    • Authors will be consulted by the editor in charge about the OA option during the acceptance stage

  • Indicating your affiliation to the University of Birmingham will give a 50% discount.
  • WS will confirm eligibility with the UoB membership scheme administrator.
