Since the start of term there have been a number of reports of private e-scooters being left either unattended or obstructing fire escape routes and other high-traffic areas. It is a legal requirement to keep fire exits and internal escape routes clear of all obstructions. Leaving items unattended also poses a security risk.

Currently private e-scooters are not permitted by law for use on public highways and in other public spaces. Accordingly, the use of private scooters is not permitted on campus.

In the summer of 2020, the UK government made rental e-scooters legal for trials in towns and cities. The University of Birmingham is supporting the West Midlands trial and has permitted the rental scooters to operate on campus to learn more about the potential of this new form of transport. Safe use of the rental e-scooters is paramount and has guided implementation on campus.
