Key funding calls with open or rolling deadlines, with recommended career stages.

Please contact your HoD and CRSO at the earliest possible opportunity if you are interested in applying to any of these schemes. In some cases internal processes and deadlines will apply. CRSO can help determine whether the scheme is suitable for your career stage and experience, and aligned with your research plans and trajectory. 

Please also initially discuss your research ideas with peers and School DoRs to ensure that proposals being put forward to these schemes are original, suitably mature and of high research quality. 

Most competitive applications require several months of preparation and will allow time for elements such as; a pitch to peers, internal review, engagement with external stakeholders, considered design of the research programme, generation of relevant application documentation, budget preparation, securing of institutional commitments, requesting external letters of support, and obtaining institutional approvals.

Catalyst Awards support researchers without prior experience of leading a significant research project to accelerate their trajectory as independent researchers, to unlock their potential and build leadership and convenor experience through the delivery of ambitious and/or complex projects.

AHRC Standard Research Grants support collaborative research projects that require leadership from more than one researcher.

ESRC New Investigator Grants support researchers at the start of their careers to enable their transition to become independent researchers.

Wellcome Discovery Awards provide funding for established researchers and teams from any discipline to pursue research that delivers significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health and wellbeing.

Health and Social Care Delivery Research (HSDR) Programme – standard researcher-led scheme

There are four Stage 1 calls per year. These are usually around January, May, September and November.

The HSDR Programme funds research projects with the aim of producing rigorous and relevant evidence to improve the quality, accessibility and organisation of health and social care services.

There are three Stage 1 calls per year. These are usually around January, April and September.

The PHR Programme funds research to generate evidence to inform the delivery of non-NHS interventions, intended to improve the health of the public, and reduce inequalities in health.

Visiting Professorship

Award range: A minimum of £10,000 and a maximum of £150,000

Bi-annual calls, May and October deadlines

This grant is for senior professors from overseas to bring novel experience and enhance the skills and knowledge of academic staff and students in an underrepresented area of the UK. Applications must be made by a member of academic staff, based in a UK university or other higher education institution who will be responsible for coodinating the visit.

Leverhulme Research Leadership Awards aim to support talented scholars who have successfully launched a university career but who need to build a research team of sufficient scale to tackle a distinctive research problem.

BA-Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships

Annual call, Autumn deadline

The BA/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowships are intended to enable established scholars, needing relief from teaching and administration, to have time to bring to completion a significant piece of research, through sustained period of leave for one year.

The only cost payable for this fellowship will be the salary of a replacement lecturer.
