Pay fees by Direct Debit

You can choose to spread the cost of your tuition and accommodation fees over monthly or quarterly instalments. We offer either a quarterly or monthly plan, which runs from the start of the academic year.

You will need a UK bank account that accepts Direct Debits. If you’re not sure what type of account you have, check with your bank or building society.


You may not receive your schedule of payments (also called “Advance Notification”) until you have registered with the University for the current academic session.

Payment instalments for tuition fees

  • Quarterly instalments are collected on the first working day of November, February and May.
  • Monthly instalments are collected on the first working days of November through to May.

All tuition fee instalment plans must end after May’s payment, as we need to collect all fees before the end of the current academic session.

Payment instalments for accommodation fees

  • Quarterly instalments are collected on the first working day of November, February, and May.
  • Monthly instalments are collected on the first working days of October through to May.
  • Monthly instalments for 50-week accommodation contracts only can be collected on the first working days of October through to July.  

If you join part-way through the academic session

If you join the University part-way through an academic session and choose to pay by Direct Debit, you will join the scheme at the next convenient payment date. In some cases, you might need to make a payment up front, to make up for any missed instalments.

Interest charge on Direct Debits

If the total of your tuition fee Direct Debit plan is greater than £9,500, a non-refundable interest charge will be applied. This will not exceed 1% above the base rate of the Bank of England at the time of the instalment plan application.

Accommodation fee Direct Debit plans are not subject to interest charges.  

Change of bank account details

If you’re an existing Direct Debit payer and want to switch the bank account that your Direct Debit comes from, request this by raising a Student Payment Query on the Finance Service Portal.

Cancellation of Direct Debits

You have the right to cancel your Direct Debit at any time. If you cancel your Direct Debit, the remaining balance on your account will be due for payment straight away.

Late payment charge

Collecting late payments costs the University money. If we don’t receive your payment when it is due, you will be charged a default charge of £50 or 1.5% (whichever is greater) to cover these costs.

Direct Debits explained

A Direct Debit is an instruction from you to your bank or building society, that tells them to pay the University agreed amounts from your account. You will receive a list of the collection dates and the amounts when we set up your Direct Debit; this is called an Advance Notice.

If you do not cancel your Direct Debit, we will continue to automatically collect payments for your fees in this way, throughout your years of study. We’ll send you a new Advance Notice at the start of each academic session. These payments will be taken from your bank account automatically on the agreed collection dates.

When you are paying by Direct Debit instalments, you are protected from errors by the Direct Debit Guarantee.
