Your arrival essentials

It’s time to get excited! If you’re reading this page, it means you’re at the beginning of your student accommodation journey. We can’t wait to welcome you to our thriving student community and your new home very soon.

There are a few things you need to know before you pack your bags and look forward to life at University of Birmingham.

Student ambassador helping new student move into their accommodation.

Book your arrival timeslot

Timeslots are available from Friday 20 September to Friday 4 October. While we encourage you to move in over Arrivals Weekend (Friday 20 September to Sunday 22 September) so you can make the most of Welcome Week, you can move in any time up until Friday 4 October 2024.

It’s important to book an arrival timeslot so we know when to expect you on campus. You can do this as soon as you’ve completed the Accommodation Pass – your induction to all things student accommodation at University of Birmingham.

You must complete this by 19 September 2024 if you want to check-in to your new home over Arrivals Weekend.

Please note that you will not be able to arrive on Friday 20 September if you're living in:

  • Mason Block 4
  • Chamberlain Block B
  • Jarratt Hall flats 1-41 or 58-87
  • Shackleton flats 1-33
  • Tennis Court Block 23
  • Maple Bank Block 8
  • Ashcroft Block 1
  • Ashcroft Townhouses Block 5
  • 15-23 Pritchatts Road Townhouses
  • 3, 7, 9 and 11 Pritchatts Road Studios

Check-in is only available from Saturday 21 September for these residences. The timeslots shown to you will be adjusted accordingly.

If you’ve chosen to live with one of our trusted accommodation partners, they will be in touch with you directly about checking into your new home. They will also provide their own induction. You do not need to complete the Accommodation Pass – nor will you have access to it.

For more information about checking into partner accommodation, please see the 'Moving in with our partners' section below.

Travelling to us

The University is well connected to all of Birmingham’s major transport routes.

University Station is a five-minute walk from the centre of campus and runs a high-frequency service to and from Birmingham New Street (Grand Central) in just seven minutes. The station is a ten-minute walk from Pritchatts Park and Selly Oak Villages, and a four-minute bus ride from The Vale Village.

If you’re travelling by car, you’ll be directed around our villages by our student ambassadors over Arrivals Weekend. You’ll have 30 minutes to unload before being redirected to a long-stay car park on site (if you wish to stay longer). Parking is free over Arrivals Weekend.

There is a limited number of accessible parking spaces on site for Blue Badge holders. Please give us a call on 0121 415 8520 if you require on of these spaces. If you or anyone helping you move in has any mobility concerns, please contact us.

Parking at The Vale

Once you have unloaded your belongings, please move your car to North East Car Park (52 Pritchatts Road, Birmingham, B15 2SA).

From here, you can return to The Vale on foot (approx. 20 minute-walk) or take one of the shuttle buses that will be running regularly from the car park. These will run between 9am to 6.30pm on Saturday 21 September and 9am to 5pm on Sunday 22 September. The service will take you to and from the village throughout the day.

Parking is also available at:

  • Priorsfield (B15 2RT)
  • Park House (B15 2RT)
  • Westmere (B15 2RS)
  • Beech House (B5 7ST)

These smaller car parks are located on the left-hand side of  Edgbaston Park Road, once you've exited right from The Vale. From these car parks, you can walk back to the village (ten minutes) or meet the shuttle bus at North East Car Park.

Don't worry if you can't find a space; we'll direct you to an available parking spot.

Parking at Pritchatts Park Village

Once you have unloaded your belongings, please move your car to Pritchatts Road Multi-storey Car Park, which will be clearly signposted as you exit Pritchatts Park Village onto Brailsford Drive.

Don't worry if you can't find a space; we'll direct you to an available parking spot.

Parking at Selly Oak Village

Once you have unloaded your belongings, please move your car to Edgbaston Park Car Park (Edgbaston Park road, B15 7SW).

To get here, travel down the Bristol Road (A38) towards the city centre. At the traffic lights adjacent to the Sport & Fitness centre, turn left. The entrance to the car park will be the first turn on your right. From here, Bournbrook and Jarratt Hall are within a ten-minute walk. Don't worry if you can't find a space; we'll direct you to an available parking spot.

There may also be on-street parking in the surrounding area, including Dale Road; however, we cannot gurantee availability.

Please note that parking will be extremely restricted at Jarratt Hall and Bournbrook over Arrivals Weekend; please ensure you unload and move your car as quickly as possible.

What to pack

Treat moving to university as a long holiday; only pack the things you really need, plus a few things that will help you feel at home (some of your favourite books, photos, etc.). Visit our ‘What to pack’ page for more information.

Before you do anything, see what’s already included in your room and flat by checking out your accommodation inventory today.

So you don’t have to pack bulky bedding and kitchen utensils, you can buy kitchen, dining, and bedding packs through the ‘Your accommodation upgrades’ section of the Accommodation Pass. You can also get them from your village reception upon arrival (available while stocks last).

If you're a postgraduate, a kitchen, dining, and bedding pack is included in your accommodation and will be in your flat or room upon arrival.

You can also buy lots of student essentials through UniKitOut. We've partnered with the team to ensure all the kitchen, bedding and bathroom items you need are ready and waiting for you when you arrive. Simply place your order by midday (12 noon) Thursday 18 September 2024 for Arrivals Weekend delivery. Enjoy 10% off when you use the code BHAM10 at checkout.

Place an order with UniKitOut

What not to pack

Please do not pack:

  • Kettles, toasters, or other small kitchen items – it’s better to buy as a flat when you arrive
  • A doorstop – your room and kitchen doors are fire doors and should not be propped open
  • Candles – these pose a huge fire risk and are not allowed in your accommodation
  • Illegal substance of any kind
  • Dangerous weapons
  • Your pet

As parking at our villages is extremely limited, we do not recommend bringing your car with you. A limited number of spaces are reserved for Blue Badge and permit holders. Find out more through our ‘Contracts, inventories, and facilities’ page.

A big Birmingham Welcome

Welcome Week (23 – 27 September) is packed with exciting activities and events to introduce you to the University and help you settle into student life. We’re talking campus tours, socials from the Guild of Students, and our annual Societies Fair.

Discover what’s on, secure your Welcome Wristband, and begin planning your first week in Brum by visiting our Welcome pages today.

Get vaccinated

New students are considered to be at risk of meningitis and septicaemia (also called sepsis or blood poisoning). We therefore encourage you to check that your MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) and MenACWY vaccinations are up to date. You can do this by contacting your doctor.

If you haven’t received either vaccine, we strongly recommend that you get vaccinated a few weeks before you arrive on campus.

If you’re an international student, you can request to be vaccinated as soon as you’ve registered with a GP in the UK.

Find your people

Get to know your neighbours with free activities and socials run by our student activators. Find out what events they have planned over on the Guild of Students' website. The team will also be on hand to help you settle in in your first few weeks, along with other students who can provide peer support on all aspects of university life.

We'll also share the best things to do in your halls in our monthly Student Living newsletter, which you'll receive from October. You can also stay in the know by following Student Living on Instagram.

You can connect with your future flatmates before you arrive through Unibuddy, an online community where students can find out more about university life and chat to their peers.
