Your arrival essentials

It’s time to get excited! If you’re reading this page, it means you’re at the beginning of your student accommodation journey. We can’t wait to welcome you to our thriving student community and your new home very soon.

There are a few things you need to know before you pack your bags and look forward to life at University of Birmingham.

Student ambassador helping new student move into their accommodation.

Book your arrival timeslot

If you're joining us in January, you can move into your new home from 4 January 2025. The main arrivals weekend for students joining us at this time takes place from Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 January 2025. Four-hour timeslots are available to book on these dates, starting at 9am.

We use timeslots to help us know when you're due to arrive on campus; don't worry if you arrive outside of these times or dates, you'll still be above to move in.

You can book a timeslot as soon as you've completed the Accommodation Pass – your induction to all things student accommodation at University of Birmingham. This is an essential part of your University induction, so please ensure you complete it before you arrive.

If you arrive outside of normal hours (between 10pm and 7am), you can collect a food bag from your village reception. This will contain items such as snacks, noodles/pasta pot, and drinks to ensure you have something to eat and drink while you wait for the shops to open the next day. Food bags are free and you do not need to pre-order them.

If you’ve chosen to live with one of our trusted accommodation partners, they will be in touch with you directly about checking into your new home. They will also provide their own induction. You do not need to complete the Accommodation Pass – nor will you have access to it.

For more information about checking into partner accommodation, please see the 'Moving in with our partners' section below.

Travelling to us

The University is well connected to all of Birmingham’s major transport routes.

University Station is a five-minute walk from the centre of campus and runs a high-frequency service to and from Birmingham New Street (Grand Central) in just seven minutes. The station is a ten-minute walk from Pritchatts Park and Selly Oak Villages, and a four-minute bus ride from The Vale Village.

Please visit our 'Travelling to and from campus' pages for more information.

The roadworks that were due to take place on Edgbaston Park Road from 6 January 2025 have been postponed until the summer. You can therefore look forward to a (hopefully!) smooth and uninterrupted journey.

Checking into your accommodation

Unless you're living at Maple Bank, your student ID card is your room card. You can collect your ID card from your village reception on arrival.

If you're living at Maple Bank, you will need to collect a physical room key from Shackleton reception, along with your ID.

If your ID card isn't available at reception for whatever reason, you will need to collect a temporary room access card instead. You will then need to collect your student ID card from the Aston Webb Student Hub.

The hub is open Monday to Friday between 9am (10am on Wednesdays) and 5pm. Once you have collected your ID card, please return your access card to your village reception.

  • The Vale Village – Shackleton reception (B15 3SX)
  • Pritchatts Park Village – Pritchatts House reception (B15 2QX
  • Selly Oak Village – Jarratt Hall reception (B29 6FQ)

All receptions are open 24/7. If one of our friendly team members isn't at the desk, please give them a call:

  • The Vale Village – 0121 415 8520
  • Pritchatts Park Village – 0121 414 9022
  • Selly Oak Village – 0121 415 1011

Don't forget to bring photo ID and your student number with you; we can’t give you your access card or room keys without it. Proof of booking is also helpful.

What to pack

Treat moving to university as a long holiday; only pack the things you really need, plus a few things that will help you feel at home (some of your favourite books, photos, etc.). Visit our ‘What to pack’ page for more information.

Before you do anything, see what’s already included in your room and flat by checking out your accommodation inventory today.

If you're joining us in January, a complimentary kitchen, dining, and bedding pack is included in your accommodation and will be in your flat or room upon arrival. You therefore do not need to bring your duvet, pillows, kitchen utensils, plates and bowls, cups and mugs, or any other bulky kitchen or bedroom items with you.

You can also buy lots of student essentials through UniKitOut. We've partnered with the team to ensure all the kitchen, bedding and bathroom items you need are available to buy and be delivered.

Place an order with UniKitOut

What not to pack

Please do not pack:

  • Kettles, toasters, or other small kitchen items – it’s better to buy as a flat when you arrive
  • A doorstop – your room and kitchen doors are fire doors and should not be propped open
  • Candles – these pose a huge fire risk and are not allowed in your accommodation
  • Illegal substance of any kind
  • Dangerous weapons
  • Your pet

If you're joining us in January, you will receive a free bedding, kitchen, and dining pack in your accommodation. You therefore do not need to bring your duvet, pillows, kitchen utensils, cups and plates, or any other kitchen and dining items with you.

As parking at our villages is extremely limited, we do not recommend bringing your car with you. A limited number of spaces are reserved for Blue Badge and permit holders. Find out more through our ‘Contracts, inventories, and facilities’ page.

A big Birmingham Welcome

To welcome you to your new home, you'll receive a welcome pack in your room on arrival, plus an in-person visit from our Welcome team during your first week with us. Your accommodation's wellbeing ambassadors and event activators will also be available to help you settle in, hosting events to help you meet new people and make new friends.

The Guild of Students will be hosting special Welcome events at The Vale Village for students arriving in January 2025:

  • Wednesday 8 January (Mason Lounge)
  • Friday 10 January (Duck and Scholar, Shackleton)

Both events will take place between 1pm and 3pm.

Get vaccinated

New students are considered to be at risk of meningitis and septicaemia (also called sepsis or blood poisoning). We therefore encourage you to check that your MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) and MenACWY vaccinations are up to date. You can do this by contacting your doctor.

If you haven’t received either vaccine, we strongly recommend that you get vaccinated a few weeks before you arrive on campus.

If you’re an international student, you can request to be vaccinated as soon as you’ve registered with a GP in the UK.

Find your people

Get to know your neighbours with free activities and socials run by our student activators. Find out what events they have planned over on the Guild of Students' website. The team will also be on hand to help you settle in in your first few weeks, along with other students who can provide peer support on all aspects of university life.

We'll also share the best things to do in your halls in our monthly Student Living newsletter. You can also stay in the know by following Student Living on Instagram.

You can connect with your future flatmates before you arrive through Unibuddy, an online community where students can find out more about university life and chat to their peers.

This page will be revised before every main arrivals period. Last revised: 9 December 2024.
