Support for students with adult dependents

At Birmingham, we promote a positive and supportive attitude towards students who face additional costs as a result of caring for dependents.

If you are a full-time student and have a partner (including a partner of the same sex) or another adult, usually a member of your family, who depends on you financially, you may be eligible for the Adult Dependants’ Grant.

If you are under 25, the adult dependant cannot be your partner unless you are married or in a civil partnership.

You are also not eligible if the adult dependant is:

  • your child
  • a relative who earns more than £3,796 a year
  • getting student finance

How much you get will depend on your income and that of your adult dependant(s). The grant is worth up to £3,094 an academic year (rate for 2020/21) and is paid in three instalments by the Student Loans Company.

The grant does not have to be paid back and is paid in addition to your other student finance. The grant is not available, however, if you receive a Postgraduate Loan.

You can find more information about the Adult Dependants’ Grant on the official government website.
